Happy First Sunday of Advent, My Lovelies!

How is your Advent Season so far?  Have you been busy, or are you enjoying the season at a slower pace than normal?  In order to truly enjoy this special season, I've decided to share a few of my favorite Christmas and Advent posts from previous years.  You probably recognize our Advent wreath (above).  I try to style it differently each year:  I added moss, cinnamon scented pinecones, and snow.  I'm also using stark white candles this year.  It might not be as pretty as the fresh flowers I've used in the past, but I think the rustic, natural look is a nice change.

Today I'm sharing a very easy Christmas cookie that my family loves:  the ever popular date ball.  During Christmas, most Southern parties have the holy trinity of balls:  date, sausage, and bourbon.  We Southerners love our balls!  :/

Southern Date Balls

Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
1 stick butter
1 egg, well beaten
1 cup pitted dates, finely chopped
1 cup nuts, finely chopped (I like walnuts)
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups Rice Krispies
Confectioner’s sugar

Directions:
Melt butter and sugar in a medium sauce pan over low heat.
Add egg and stir until thoroughly incorporated.
Add dates, nuts and vanilla and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer 10 minutes.
Remove from heat and stir in Rice Krispies.
When cool enough to handle, roll into bite-sized balls and roll in confectioner’s sugar.

Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!

First Sunday of Advent Reading:  Hope

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned. […] For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
~Isaiah 9:2, 6-7

Until next time...

...that I'd like to do next year!

Happy Wednesday, My Lovelies!  There are several things I wanted to do around the house for Christmas that I didn't do since I wanted to keep things simple.  I thought it would be helpful for me to write a post for next year, and I thought y'all might like to see what my plans are for next Christmas.

First of all, I did NOT put up a tree this year.  There were several reasons I didn't, but the main one is my grand dog will be visiting, and he is TROUBLE!  Hopefully he will be out of the puppy stage next year.

I love the one from The General, above, and below:

I would like to purchase a similar one I found at Balsam Hill, and it's flocked!  We might buy one when they go on sale after Christmas.

You can find this tree HERE.

Sometimes I make menus for our family meals.  I saw these cute ones from Daphne's Diary.  You can download this menu and print several for your Christmas dinner.  They have some festive downloads for all seasons, y'all.

I was inspired by this photo from Shabby Chic:

I like the small bowls with the floating roses.  Instead of roses, I'd like to use the pretty camellias we have on our property.  They are in bloom this time of the year, and they are also pink.  If we have any left after the very cold weather expected over Christmas, I might try this look for New Year's Eve.

I did not participate in a cookie swap this year.  Next year I'd like to host one.

Southern Bourbon Balls

At the cookie swap, I'd like to make something like this for party favors:

This pretty craft is from Donna Hay.  Do you watch her on Disney+?  I enjoy her shows and videos.  I also follow her blog.
Here is the link to this project, along with other Christmas styling tips and tricks.
You might remember my review of her latest cookbook, The Fast Five, HERE.

Although it's a pared-down Christmas this year, I'm having a lot of fun, and I'm finding a lot of joy.  What is bringing you joy this week?

Until next time...

Blessings!

Things I Didn't Do For Christmas This Year...

Happy Third Sunday of Advent, My Lovelies!

For each of the four Sundays of Advent 2022 I will be sharing my favorite tips to help YOU make your holiday prep easier.  These days it takes me about three times longer to accomplish a task, so I need all the help I can get this season!

But first, today we light the candle that represents joy:

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
~Philippians 4:4-5

But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord."
~Luke 2:10-11

The First Sunday of Advent, I shared with you the easiest way to clean a chandelier.
Last week, the Second Sunday of Advent, I shared with you how to take care of poinsettias

This week's tip:  How to freeze cookie dough.

Everyone loves hot cookies fresh from the oven.  One of the best tips I rely on during the Christmas Season is homemade frozen cookie dough.  When friends stop by, or when my family members want homemade cookies, all I have to do is preheat the oven, reach in the freezer for the dough, and we have hot cookies in a short amount of time.

My family loves chocolate chip cookies, and I usually bake the simple recipe found on the Nestlé Tollhouse Semisweet Chocolate Chips bag.  After I make a batch of dough, this is how I freeze it:

Place either a Silpat mat or parchment paper on a cookie sheet.  Scoop (or drop) the cookies close to each other without touching.  Then freeze for six hours or overnight.

Place frozen dough balls in a freezer bag and seal, making sure to get as much air out of the bag as possible.  Dough will last up to three months in the freezer.

This process will work for any type of chunky drop cookies.

The cookies can be baked from frozen, but you will need to add a minute or two to your bake time.  I usually have to add about three minutes because our oven seems to be slow.

If you'd like to see a video for how to freeze chunky, slice-and-bake, and cut-out cookie dough, please click this link.

NOTE:  Frozen cookie dough also makes a thoughtful gift.  You can also have gift bags on hand and send your guests home with leftover cookies after baking them.

Until next time...

Blessings!

The Third Sunday of Advent 2022

Sunday, December 11, 2022

Do you like Irish coffee?  Our version doesn't include whiskey which might disappoint a few of you.  Ours is simply coffee, a wee bit of Bailey's, whipped cream, and a cinnamon stick.

My favorite service at church is Lessons and Carols.  My favorite song is the Irish song The Canticle of the Turning.  Our church choir and musicians play this every year.  It always makes me so happy to hear it!  Below is a video of the song with lyrics.  I hope you'll play it because it will bring a smile to your face!

In keeping with the Celtic theme, today's Chrismon is the Celtic cross:

The circle at the top stands for eternal life. A circle goes round and round and never ends. Our life in Christ also never ends.

"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, and whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." John 3:36

Today's scripture:

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,  and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
Luke 2:6-7

Until next time...

The Canticle of the Turning

I decided to ask a Question of the Day because I need y'all's help!
I'd like to try baking a couple of new cookie recipes this Christmas and surprise my family.

Also: Do you have a favorite source for Christmas cookie recipes?  Do you have a recipe book, or do you have a Pinterest board for them?  Please share your resources in the comments section below.

Here is today's Advent Chrismon:

The circle or sphere

The circle or sphere represents eternity.  Since only God is eternal, it is also a symbol for Him and the eternal life only He can grant.

Today's scripture:

“ ‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will fulfill the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah.

“ ‘In those days and at that time
    I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line;
he will do what is just and right in the land.
In those days Judah will be saved
and Jerusalem will live in safety.
This is the name by which it will be called:
    The Lord Our Righteous Savior.’

Jeremiah 33:14-16

Until next time...

Blessings!

Advent Day Four

Saturday, December 4, 2021

I read about this book in the Christmas issue of Daphne's Diary Magazine.

Welcome to a fun What I'm Reading Wednesday post, My Lovelies!

Today's feature is a very sweet book written by the Queen of Christmas books Donna VanLiere entitled The Christmas Table.  Plus, I'm sharing a recipe from the book that would be a fun addition to New Year's Eve celebrations or football parties.

According to Goodreads:

From Donna VanLiere, the New York Times bestselling author of The Christmas Hope Series comes another heartwarming, inspirational story for the holidays, The Christmas Table.

In June 1972, John Creighton determines to build his wife Joan a kitchen table. His largest project to date had been picture frames but he promises to have the table ready for Thanksgiving dinner. Inspired to put something delicious on the table, Joan turns to her mother's recipes she had given to Joan when she and John married.

In June 2012, Lauren Mabrey discovers she's pregnant. Gloria, Miriam, and the rest of her friends at Glory's Place begin to pitch in, helping Lauren prepare their home for the baby. On a visit to the local furniture builder, Lauren finds a table that he bought at a garage sale but has recently refinished. Once home, a drawer is discovered under the table which contains a stack of recipe cards. Growing up in one foster home after another, Lauren never learned to cook and is fascinated as she reads through the cards. Personal notes have been written on each one from the mother to her daughter and time and again Lauren wonders where they lived, when they lived, and in a strange way, she feels connected to this mother and her daughter and wants to make the mother proud.

The story continues to from 1972 to 2012 as Joan battles breast cancer and Lauren learns to cook, preparing for the baby's arrival. As Christmas nears, can Lauren unlock the mystery of the table, and find the peace she's always longed for?

My Review:

This is the sweetest story set during Christmas that I've read in several years.  It has a dual storyline that weaves together perfectly at the very end.  The first storyline is from 2012, and it's about a young expectant mother named Lauren.  She is learning to cook from recipe cards she found in the drawer of a refinished vintage kitchen table.  She and her husband are enjoying the recipes, and her new skills as a cook are giving her the confidence she desperately needs: Lauren is scared about motherhood because she's a foster care kid, and no one really modeled good mothering for her.  The second storyline concerns Joan and her battle with breast cancer in the 1970s.  She has two young children, and her sweet husband is building the table (the one that Lauren eventually purchases in 2012) for her during this time.  Joan is a wonderful cook, and her mother painstakingly made recipe cards for her when she first married.

Even though Lauren loves all the recipes she's tried, she can't help but feel badly for the owner of the recipe cards because they were lovingly made for a daughter, and they contain family history.  She decides to find the original owner of the cards using only a single clue from one of the cards.  Lauren perseveres after many dead-ends and continues her search even as she's working and fluffing the nest for her first baby.

The story takes place in a town called Grandon, and Lauren works at Glory's Place, an after school childcare facility where children can also receive tutoring.  Glory's Place and Grandon have been featured in many of VanLiere's books, so it's always fun to "visit" favorite characters.  It's the tenth book in the Christmas Hope Series, yet they can all be read as "stand alone" books.  You can read them in any order if you wish.  You can read my review of The Christmas Secret HERE, The Christmas Promise HERE,  and The Christmas Town HERE.  Many of her books have been adapted for Hallmark, including last year's Christmas Town starring Candace Cameron Bure.

There are several recipes discussed throughout the novel, and what makes it fun are the neat tips, tricks, and anecdotes written on the recipe cards.  VanLiere includes many of the recipes at the back of the book, and they all sound delicious.  I tried the chocolate chip cheese ball, and it was a hit!

Recipe for Chocolate Chip Cheeseball

Ingredients:

1 1/4 cups roasted, chopped pecans
3 8-ounce packages cream cheese, softened
1 1/2 cups mini chocolate chips
1 cup sifted powder sugar
1 T ground cinnamon

Cook's Note:  I bought a bag of Priester's roasted and salted pecans and chopped them up.  You can roast pecans yourself if you prefer.

Procedure:

Mix all the ingredients together except the pecans and form into a ball.  Press the pecans around the entire ball.  Chill for at least two hours before serving.

May be served with ginger snaps or any flavor graham crackers.

I served the chocolate chip cheese ball with ginger snaps.

I am currently reading VanLiere's The Christmas Star, and that will be the last one of the season.  I'll probably start back where I left off with the Mitford Series in January.

Fun Christmas Book and Recipe

Wednesday, December 30, 2020

Happy December, My Lovelies!  La Countess de Monet has been such a good helper for me as we prepare for all the Christmas fun.  We still haven't traveled much (with the exception being Baton Rouge), and we will be going back this month for our oldest daughter's graduation from her doctoral program.

One of my favorite markets is the Mount Laurel Grocery.  La Countess accompanied me a couple of weeks ago while I was buying goodies for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

La Countess likes to hang out on our patio by the fireplace.  She's reminding me to remind Mr. Sketchy Reader to split more wood!

La Countess is full with all the things to make...

S'mores!

My family likes choices, so I created a S'möres-gåsbord of treats!
I placed the combinations in cellophane bags with ribbon and gift tags labeling the type of s'more.  This made it convenient for everyone to make the s'mores because everything to make one was together in a single serve bag.

Here are the different s'mores flavor combinations:

Plain Jane
marshmallows, honey graham crackers, and Hershey bars

Cinnamon Cindy
marshmallows, cinnamon graham crackers, and Hershey bars

Cocoa Coco
marshmallows, chocolate graham crackers, and Hershey bars

Peppermint Barkley
marshmallows, honey graham crackers, peppermint bark

Peppermint Patti
marshmallows, chocolate graham crackers, Hershey bars

My sweet son-in-law Christopher likes spending his time outside when he's in Alabama.

Do your family and friends enjoy bonfires and roasting marshmallows?  We love this time of the year, and we enjoy eating alfresco on warmer days.
