Hello, My Lovelies!  I hope you are well and having a lovely summer.  I'm beginning to see the first of the back-to-school ads, and it isn't even Independence Day yet!  In other news, we had our first day of sunshine after weeks of rainy and stormy days.  And with the sunny skies, the heat has returned.  But that's okay!

Today I wanted to share with you a few projects I've been working on in my art studio.  I've accomplished much because of the rain keeping me inside.  The first thing I want to share is a finished oil painting from a photo I took on our trip last year.  It's a cartouche from the Imperial Apartments at Göttwieg Abbey in Krems, Austria.

I've also been doing a lot of crafting.  This year I've been keeping up with my reading with monthly reading tag journals.  I hang them with "S" hooks on an over-the-table rod in my studio.  I will share more about it in a week or so.  I've also been making hand-painted and drawn bookmarks of my favorite books that I place in the tag journals.

This is the finished reading tag journal for May.

This is an example of a handmade bookmark I made for Jenny Hickman's For Ever.
This is a special edition book.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I was fighting a cold at the beginning of June, and that I had been drinking copious amounts of hot tea.  Below is my new favorite recipe for tea, and it is made from a Chocolate Earl Grey Tea, the "Cozy" blend based on Meg's Tea Room (an Instagram influencer) by Cliché Teas.

We were about three weeks late signing-up for our summer community supported agriculture box.  We received our first box on Thursday, and we are very happy with it.

Here are a few links to our favorite recipes from this week's box.

We were pleasantly surprised with these muffins.
I will share more CSA recipes this summer.  Stay tuned!

June Update From My Art Studio

Tuesday, June 24, 2025

Hello, My Lovelies!  Can you believe that June is halfway over?  Midsummer will be this weekend, and then the days will start getting shorter.

I caught a nasty summertime cold on June 1st.  Summertime colds are the WORST!  The only thing that makes me feel a little bit better is that I really haven't missed any lake time because it has been the wettest and stormiest June *ever*...  My cold literally lasted for 15 days!

Although I never really spiked a fever, I've been cold because my family likes to keep the house cooler than what I like.  So because of my cold and staying inside a lot in the air conditioning, I've been drinking copious amounts of tea.  Also, my doctor said the best thing I could do to help myself get better is to constantly hydrate.

Serendipitously, we had a tea recipe as part of our Bible study earlier in the month, and I tried it and liked it.

I'm sharing it here in this post!  This is all you need to make it:

The teas recommended for this recipe are hibiscus, rooibos, or chamomile.
Any herbal tea you like will probably work.

A Delightful Afternoon Tea

Ingredients:

6 cups boiling water
2 herbal tea bags
Juice from one orange
Juice from one lemon
2 T organic honey
3 fresh sprigs mint

Directions:

Combine water and tea bags in a teapot, and steep for 8 minutes.  Pour in your fresh orange and lemon juice, then add the honey.  Garnish with fresh mint.

This is a great recipe to bookmark because you can drink a cup while it's hot, then refrigerate the rest to have for later.  This tea is excellent iced!

This recipe is from the devotional SoulFull by Farrell Mason.

I also watched Cubs baseball, and I binge watched Harry Wilde.  It's a mystery series set in Ireland starring Jane Seymour.  I highly recommend it!

I have also been reading a few cozy fantasies as well as a couple of classic fantasy books.  More on them in a later post.

Full disclosure, I was also planning on reviewing a couple of new tea products, but I couldn't get my act together.  I promise to share them along with a few mini book reviews at the end of the month.

I can't stress enough how hydration helped me feel so much better.  :D

Yep!  You read that correctly!  I will review and share a recipe for Cozy Chocolate Earl Grey Tea.

Stay hydrated, y'all!

Until next time...

Blessings!

Tea Recipe and How To Cope With a Summer Cold

Wednesday, June 18, 2025

Happy October, My Lovelies!  Today I'll be sharing with you my September wrap-up, a lovely recipe, and what I'm working on this month.

September was a busy month for us.  We finished our basement media room, and I love the color I painted it:  It's called "yellow frost."

I will post more photos of this project later this month.

I also had my port taken out on September 17th, and I can't tell you how happy this makes me.  Although I dreaded the surgery, it's nice not to have that constant reminder of chemo in my body.  We also received our last CSA subscription box the same day, so I have been busy cooking and putting-up vegetables.

I made refrigerator pickles for the first time last month.  You can try it yourself by using THIS RECIPE.

I finished my first painting since treatment in September, a painting for our library.  It feels so good to be moving paint around a canvas again, but I still want to draw a little, too.

Because I've set some personal goals for autumn, I'm trying very hard NOT to stream or scroll as much.  I want to keep up with the news, but it's hard to find a good source these days.  I've finally found a wonderful service called The Pour Over.  They strictly give the facts about top news stories without the spin.  They also give Christian perspectives for their stories that I find brilliant as well as comforting.  Please click on the graphic below for more information.

This year I decorated more than I ever have for Halloween.  I'm not really a Halloween lover, but I was inspired by Michael's of all places.  They featured a pretty line this year called "Haunted Forest," and it really spoke to me.  I'm planning on taking all the Halloween and fall decor down on November 1st and decorating for Christmas immediately after.  We have two quick trips planned for November, and I'm looking forward to enjoying Christmas decor earlier this year.

I put out all our pumpkins and pumpkin paintings.

I've been learning new skills with floral arranging both at home and at church.  Below are some of the prettiest autumn roses I've ever seen.  Called "High Magic," they truly are magical for the season.

The red edges of these stunning roses were emphasized once the roses opened more.

Finally, we've been visiting our local farmers' market on Saturday morning.  One of my favorite vendors is a micro bakery, and we've been pleased with all the bread we've purchased from them.

This piece of art is actually pumpkin bread.

Our last CSA box featured Hakurei turnips.  Stonehollow Farmstead's CSA blog recommended a delicious soup recipe, and I made it.  The fam loved it so much, I've made it twice more!  I want to share it with you because it's a super-easy, comforting soup perfect for fall and winter.  Plus it has the added benefit of microgreens that gives it a unique flavor and nutritional boost.

Carrot, Hakurei Turnip, and Ginger Bisque

The most difficult part of this recipe is chopping the carrots and turnips.

Ingredients

3 C Carrots, peeled and diced
2 C Hakurei Turnips, Peeled and Diced
⅛ to ¼ Cup Fresh Ginger, Peeled and Diced
Carton of Chicken Stock
1 C Heavy Cream
Microgreens
Black Pepper

Procedure

Combine your diced carrots, turnips, ginger and stock in you large soup pot/pan.  Add enough stock to completely cover the vegetables, but don't add too much because you want the soup to be thick.

Cook on medium/medium high heat for 15 to 20 minutes until vegetables are tender and can be easily pierced with a fork.

Turn off the heat and carefully transfer your vegetable/stock mixture to your blender (you can use a ladle to do this or gently pour everything in).

If desired, pour a cup of heavy cream on top of everything once it’s in the blender.

Use the blender to puree the mixture, and pour everything back in your pan.
Turn the heat on medium if needed to reheat the soup slightly.

To serve, drizzle the top with heavy cream, sprinkle with black pepper and add microgreens if desired.

Leftovers store great in the refrigerator and can easily be reheated.

This recipe is from Taproot Farm.  Here is the link to the recipe.

COOK'S NOTES:

Although we like ginger, we thought it overpowered this recipe.  The second time I made it I left it completely out, and everyone liked it better.  I would suggest a smaller amount of ginger (one eighth of a cup) if you like it.

Instead of using a blender, I used an immersion blender and blended the soup directly in the pot.

Truly the black pepper and microgreens make this recipe even better.  I prefer rainbow microgreens, but you can use whatever you want.

Instead of drizzling with cream, we drizzled a little bit of olive oil on the soup.

This recipe is a hit!  It's a quick, comforting meal for the season.
You can add a crusty French batard to really make this meal special.

What I'm Working On In October

This month I'm participating in a fun book challenge on Instagram.  If you have an account, please follow me and I'll follow you back!

I turned some of my favorite Halloween-themed books into ghosties by using vellum.

I will share my September Reading Wrap-up soon, and I'm also working on a Halloween Tablescape Blog Hop that will be live on October 10th.

For the rest of the year and 2025 I'm making a goal to read more classics and books about art.

Finally, I'd like to invite you to join us in our Advent Study.  Over at our Prayer Warrior Blog, we are pretending to be the Hallmark Channel, and we're starting our Christmas celebration early, like in next week early!  We will be reading Sarah Young's Jesus Listens for Advent & Christmas.  You have a week to pick up a copy and join us.  We would love to have you!

Thank you for reading my blog!

Until next time...

Blessings!

September Wrap-Up and a Comforting Recipe

Tuesday, October 1, 2024

Happy Tuesday, My Lovelies!

First of all, I want to thank-you for reading my blog, especially the posts featuring our Community Supported Agriculture Subscription Box.  Today I'll be sharing with you a few highlights from weeks nine and ten.

Week Nine

The peaches from week nine were exceptional.  Mr. Bookish's birthday was during week nine, and he requested that I bake a Peach and Blueberry Greek Yogurt Cake for his celebration.

This was a hit with Mr. Bookish as well as family and friends.

One of the big surprise hits of the CSA boxes has been the tiny currant tomatoes.  I made a couple of Red Currant Tomato Galettes we enjoyed.

Another highlight from week nine:  Creamer Potatoes!

If you'd like tips on ways to cook and grill these delicious potatoes, click on THIS LINK.

Perhaps the biggest hit from week nine was the following simple recipe.

The Best Open-Faced Tomato Sandwich

Ingredients:

1 Loaf of Hearty Bakery Bread
Spreadable Cream Cheese with Chives (or another savory, spreadable cheese with your favorite herbs)
Your Favorite Heirloom Tomato
Fleur de Sel

Directions:

1.  Thickly cut the bread and toast it to your preference.

2.  Generously spread the cheese on one side of the slices.

3.  Top the cheese with a thick slice of tomato.

4.  Sprinkle the tomato with Fleur de Sel salt.

Y'all!!!  You must purchase this salt, above.  This is the best finishing salt, and your tomatoes are begging you to use it!  It truly makes all the difference.  This recipe is a super-easy appetizer or lunch.  But don't try it without the Fleur de Sel!

COOK'S NOTE:  If you purchase a loaf of bread and there is some left, slice it and freeze it for up to three or four months.  You can also do this with an entire loaf.  Bread freezes so well, and we have been doing this all summer with the wonderful bread varieties from Hinkel's Bakery that have been included in our boxes.

Week Ten

The highlight of Week Ten for me was the inclusion of Lion's Mane Mushrooms.  There are so many health benefits consuming them, one being brain health.  We made a Lion's Mane Mushroom Risotto.  This recipe was a huge hit, and it has a flavor that combines what you'd expect with a mushroom (earthy) and what you might not expect (seafood, like crabmeat).  I think it would be a great, hearty side for any main dish especially in the fall or winter.

Other favorite recipes from Week Ten:

This recipe is from Martha Stewart, and it is super-easy.  It can be made the night before, and it reheats nicely, too.

We enjoyed trying out new egg recipes because the eggs each week were so delicious.

I asked my family their favorite recipes we tried using ingredients from the CSA boxes.  Below are our favorites:

Peach Burrata Parmesan Crostini With Hot Honey (I made this last night!)
Deconstructed Stuffed Bell Peppers
Chicken Paprika
Best Open-Faced Tomato Sandwich
Lady Pea and Tomato Salad
Classic French Quiche Lorraine

If you want to look-up links to any of these, just use the search engine at the top of the page.

We enjoyed the ten week CSA Summer Subscription so much that we subscribed to the eight week End-Of-Summer CSA.  I will not post as much about it, only a few highlights because I've been working on projects I want to share plus I'll be looking ahead to autumn.  I'd like to thank Stone Hollow Farmstead for their commitment to providing quality produce and products to their customers.

Posts I'm Currently Working On:

Next week I'll share a few floral projects.

This Friday and the following Friday I will update you on my Summer Reading Challenge and share a few book reviews.

Until next time...

Blessings!
