Hello, My Lovelies!  Welcome to the 44th Tales of the Traveling Tote.  I have not been traveling much or even going to the lake recently.  I have had family obligations keeping me busy, but my family held an intervention a couple of weeks ago and insisted that I get away for a quick weekend to my favorite city, Chicago.  We planned to visit my two motherships:  Wrigley Field and The Art Institute of Chicago.

We enjoy staying at the historic Palmer House because it's within walking distance to the Art Institute.  Below is the pretty ceiling in the lobby.

On Friday night we ate at a fantastic Mediterranean restaurant called Avec.  Everyone loved it, and we particularly enjoyed the family-style presentation.

Saturday morning, we ate breakfast at our favorite bakery and coffee shop, The Goddess and the Baker.  They have the best breakfast pastries in Chicago!  Then we headed to Wrigleyville.  Shanley Belle and I visited a romance-only bookshop called The Last Chapter and had a ball.  We like visiting Indie Bookshops while traveling.

After the bookshop, we met up with Christopher and Trip at the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field.

Unfortunately, La Countess de Monet is too large to get into the stadium.  Miss Square Peggy and Miss Candy Max are also too large.  The dimensions must be no larger than 16" X 16" X 8".  So I carried Miss Check You're Out! because she is petite at 16" X 11.5" X 4".  She loved the game!

Clark the Cubbies' mascot before the game.  We had great seats behind the dugout on the third base side.

The Cubbies beat the Pirates 3-1, so the W flag was flown!

Saturday night after the game we ate dinner at our favorite pizza place in the city, Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinders.  They have the best pizza pie in the world!  I always order the individual mushroom one.

Sunday morning we ate breakfast at The Goddess and the Baker again because we love it so much.  Then we walked to the Art Institute for the Gustave Caillebotte:  Painting His World exhibit.   Since we're members, we were able to visit an hour earlier than the general public, so we saw the exhibit almost by ourselves.  For the Sunday before school started on Monday, there were few people at the museum.  I think it might have had something to do with the flooding rains on Saturday night.

Gustave Caillebotte was an independently wealthy Impressionist.  He was good friends with Renoir, and he painted pretty much what he wanted to paint.  During this time, painters usually painted lovely young women, but Caillebotte preferred painting men.

One of the lions in front of the museum.

I wanted to share with you two paintings, one by Renoir and one by Caillebotte.
I chose the mums by Renoir for autumn.

Chrysanthemums
Pierre August Renoir (French, 1841–1919)
1881-1882
Oil on canvas
21 5/8" × 25 7/8 "

I chose the Caillebotte painting (below) because I thought the perspective was neat.

The Boulevard Seen From Above
Gustave Caillebotte (French, 1848-1894)
1880
Oil on canvas
25 3/5" × 21 3/10"

We enjoyed the member's lounge and a late lunch of Giordano's Pizza.  Before heading to the airport, we went to the world's largest Starbucks, the Starbucks Reserve.  The four-story shop is truly something.  We had the Chicago blend, and I brought some home with me.

I also purchased a beautiful book of the Van Gogh bedrooms because we saw the exhibit in 2016 at the Art Institute.  I was so happy to have a lovely reminder of that trip, too.  The Caillebotte brochures were really large, so I didn't buy one of them.

I love how the page folds out to show all three bedroom paintings.
This book is so nice, and it also features other paintings shown at the exhibit.

I hope you enjoyed my post on my whirlwind trip to Chicago.  I literally have nothing else to share!

Tales of the Traveling Tote: My Motherships

Happy Thursday, My Lovelies!  Today I want to share with you my first project in the 2018 photo organizational challenge.

January has been hectic for me, so I intentionally started out with a small project.  I enjoy displaying photos, but because I don't like a lot of clutter, I like the option of putting them away and displaying something else in its place.  Today's craft allows you to choose five favorite photos and put them in a little flip book that can be displayed on a stand and then stored in a box.

I bought this flip book kit at Michaels.  I chose craft paper in blues and reds for the Chicago Cubbies because the photos inside are from a trip to Chicago.

Cut the craft paper to fit the shapes, or you can paint the camera.  I also glued craft paper on the pages.

This is Shelley at the Art Institute shortly after the reinstallation of of Marc Chagall's "White Crucifixion."

The photos are 6" X 4".

The rings that come in the flip book kit are too small for the stand, so I used larger ones I had on hand.

Folks can flip through the book and enjoy our photos.

When I want to store the book, I can place it in one of these book storage boxes meant to protect craft books from damage.  This one is made by 7 Gypsies.

I could easily store two of these little books in this box.

In February, I'l show you a neat way to store photos you don't want to display, but you don't want to dispose of, either.

Until next time...

Blessings!

Photo Organizational Challenge: January Project

Happy Random Tuesday, My Lovelies!  I hope your week is going well so far.  Today in honor of the Chicago Cubs I want to share with you our favorite places to visit in Chicago.

We *love* games at Wrigley Field.  We are the most devoted Cubbies fan!  Here are Mr. Art @ Home and the girls outside Wrigley Field before this season's Game 6 against the Colorado Rockies.

Go, Cubs, Go!
Go, Cubs, Go!
Hey, Chicago!
What do you say?
Cubs are gonna win today!!!

First of all, we like to stay at the Palmer House hotel because it's close to my Mother Ship, The Art Institute of Chicago.  We like to fly into Midway and take the L straight to the hotel.

After checking in, I like to immediately walk to the Art Institute of Chicago.  When we visited in April, we saw the Van Gogh's Bedrooms exhibit.

Van Gogh painted three versions of this bedroom.  This version was loaned from the Musée d'Orsay.

Shelley's favorite art at the museum is Marc Chagall's "America Windows."  We were also able to see the reinstallation of Chagall's "White Crucifixion."

After spending most of the day at the museum we enjoy visiting the Bean at Millennium Park.

The girls enjoy Wicker Park.  A lot.

The coolest coffee shop on the planet is in Wicker Park:  The Wormhole.

All the walking makes us hungry!

We love starting our day with a continental breakfast at Goddess and the Baker.

Our favorite place for dinner:  Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company.  They make the best pizzas that are part pizza, part potpie.  L@@K:

I hope you enjoyed my mini tour of Chicago!  If Chicago were in the South I'd live there!  It's my favorite city to visit, and I really would love to visit this week and go to a game or two of the World Series.

Go Cubbies Go!

In honor of the Cubbies spectacular season, the Art Institute is flying the W flag and the lions are sporting Cubbies caps.  LOVE this!

Until next time...

Hey, Chicago....what do you say?  Cubs are gonna win today!

Random Tuesday: Chicago Random

Yesterday Shanley Belle celebrated her 24th birthday!  She had a twelve-hour day because she worked and had class until 7:30, but after class she came home to a small family birthday party. The theme: The Chicago Cubs!  We watched game 4 of the NLCS.  The Cubbies defeated the Dodgers 10-2:  Shanley Belle had a very happy birthday indeed!

I made the big gift bag filled with Cubbies-themed gifts from materials I found at Paper Source.

The cake is from Edgar's Bakery.

I used flowers in Cubbies colors.

I chose this runner for the blue and red Cubbies colors in it.

The puppies wore their Cubbies jerseys for the party.  They will be cubbies for Halloween:  Mustang Sally will be Miguel Montero, Finlay will be Javier Baez, and Lily will be Addison Russell.

Happy Birthday, Shanley Belle!  I hope you enjoyed your little party, and Go Cubbies for Game 5 tonight!
