Happy Monday, My Lovelies!  How is October treating you so far?  I hope you are enjoying all the wonderful autumn things.

Today I'm sharing a wonderful Christian nonfiction written by the dynamic duo cohosts of the For the Girl podcast entitled This Wasn't the Plan: How to Surrender Your Stuck and Set Your Soul In Motion.

About This Wasn’t the Plan: How to Surrender Your Stuck and Set Your Soul in Motion

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Publication date: October 6, 2026

Have you ever looked at your life and thought, I thought my life would look better than this by now. This book is for the woman who feels stuck—in her career, relationships, emotions, or calling. It’s a guidebook for the one who feels like she’s just enduring rather than embracing life to start moving toward the life you really want.

If you’ve ever felt lost between the dreams you had freshly post-grad and the reality you’re living now, you are not alone. Mac Bridges and Kenz Durham get it. They’ve been in your shoes and walked through their own journeys with chronic illness, unanswered longings, and prayers that never seem to be answered in the miraculous way they’d envisioned. But in the midst of those seasons, they’ve also seen transformation.

It begins with a question: What if God is getting you ready? What could He be preparing in you and for you in this season? Readers are invited to imagine the great plans God is setting in motion for them, even when everything around them seems stuck in place. Through quizzes and powerful reflection questions, readers will name the areas in which they feel stuck, identify the root of those feelings, and get honest about the ways those feelings are manifested in their everyday lives.

But Mac and Kenz don’t leave readers there. Using the scaffolding of Jesus’ instructions to “ask, seek, and knock,” they challenge the reader to:

  • pray without having an answer in mind;
  • seek out clues about what God is up to;
  • take bold but faith-filled risks that unlock transformation; and
  • believe that your stuck place isn’t your final destination.

It’s time to stop waiting on the sidelines and start moving with God, trusting that He is inviting you to take the next steps into a story where every detail matters.

My Review

This book is definitely for younger women, and would be the perfect gift for a young woman completing her education and/or beginning a career.  The reason I say this is because the advice would work best before becoming stuck in a situation, whether it's in a relationship (or as the Mackenzies say "the lack there of"), or in a vocation that isn't one's calling.  Both authors give their insight, and I like how each is responsible for writing different sections.  However, if you DO have a daughter or granddaughter who's stuck in some aspect of her life, she should appreciate the lessons in this book.  I believe them to be helpful.  Another thing that's helpful is the "Where Am I Stuck?" Quiz on page forty-one.

At the end of the book there is a handy dandy workbook that has checklists (like Common Warning Signs of Stuck Seasons) and journal prompts.  I really liked the quiet time prompts and tips.  Between the anecdotal examples from the Mackenzies about how young women become stuck from their own lives and their practical approaches for becoming unstuck, I highly recommend this book.

Book Review: This Wasn't the Plan

Monday, October 5, 2026

Happy Tuesday, My Lovelies!  It has been a week.  Last week started out with a visit to my doctor suspecting an earache or possible sinus infection.  Instead, I ended up at an endodontist yesterday for a root canal.  Root canals are not for sissies.  I have to return to my dentist for the permanent filling on Thursday, and hopefully I'll be right as rain before we leave for the lake for the long Memorial Day Weekend.

Today I'm sharing a new book written by a go-getter (I follow this young woman on Instagram) entitled From Dreams to Drive: Trust God's Plan, Embrace Your Gifts, and Walk in Purpose.  Taneshia Yerby has written a fantastic book that is the perfect graduation gift.  If you have any family members or friends graduating this spring or summer, you might want to consider purchasing copies for them.

About From Dreams to Drive: Trust God’s Plan, Embrace Your Gifts, and Walk in Purpose

Publisher: Zondervan

Publication date: May 12, 2026

In From Dreams to Drive, Taneshia Yerby shows you how to discover your God-given purpose and step boldly into your calling. As the founder of the Christian Entrepreneur Organization, Taneshia shares her personal journey of spiritual and professional growth and combines it with biblical wisdom to guide you toward your mission.

With faith as your guide, you’ll be empowered to overcome obstacles in both your personal and professional life. Taneshia teaches you how to overcome self-doubt and fear by focusing on God’s promises. With prayers, affirmations, and exercises to deepen your faith and trust in God’s plan, From Dreams to Drive offers clear and compelling advice, helping you keeping your eyes on your goals and your faith strong.

You will:

  • Learn how to ask God the right questions to align your life with His plan.
  • Break through fear and doubt, and confidently step into the purpose He has for you.
  • Find the spiritual strength and clarity you need to align your business goals with God’s higher purpose, making sure your efforts are fulfilling and meaningful.

As you build unshakeable faith, you’ll gain the courage to face challenges and stay on your divine path. Taneshia’s powerful message of resilience encourages women to trust in God’s timing, let go of fear, and take action. With a practical three-phase plan, she helps you move from preparation to practice to making bold decisions. From Dreams to Drive will help you replace self-doubt with confidence, impatience with trust, and resistance with obedience. Let the journey begin!

A proud graduate of Norfolk State University, Taneshia holds a degree in Communications and uses her voice to inspire and empower Christian women in business and life.

My Thoughts

This book is lovely because it actually functions as a workbook.  I love how it's structured, and it leads the reader through four parts using logic and scripture:

  1. Follow God's Blueprint
  2. Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
  3. Identify Homegrown Hurdles
  4. Find the Courage to Move Forward

Each section includes a wrap-up, and there's plenty of room for the reader to write her thoughts and conclusions.  I do love the workbook aspect of it!

So now you understand why I think From Dreams to Drive would make a nice graduation gift.  But I also think it's a lovely book for readers at any stage of life who might like confirmation of God's purpose for their lives.  I'm already working on it myself because we are facing a very happy life change this summer!  It truly is an insightful little book.

Bookish Feature: From Dreams to Drive

Hello, My Lovelies!  How is your May so far?  I love this time of year in Central Alabama:  It's Blackberry Winter, the sun is warm, the breeze is cool, and it's my favorite time of the year to enjoy nature and dining alfresco.

Other than dining alfresco, I also enjoy reading outside these first couple of weeks of May.  I'm currently reading a book that is changing the way I think daily, and it's what I'm featuring on this week's What I'm Reading Wednesday post.  The Divine Counselor by Alex Seeley is about how the Holy Spirit wants to guide you and heal your soul.  Who wouldn't want to benefit from His Divine Counsel?

About The Divine Counselor: Renew Your Mind, Heal Your Soul, and Discover Your Purpose Through the Guidance of the Holy Spirit

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Publication date: April 7, 2026

Print length: 240 pages

Pastor Alex Seeley, co-founder of The Belonging Co., reveals how the Holy Spirit provides the deep healing, peace, and purpose beyond what therapy alone can provide.

At a time when many feel anxious and discouraged, the idea of living whole, healed, and empowered sounds wonderful–but often out of reach. Counseling, self-help books, and podcasts seem to offer temporary relief, but what about life-changing transformation?

In The Divine Counselor, Pastor Alex Seeley introduces readers to the best therapist they’ll ever meet: the Holy Spirit. Drawing on biblical insights and personal stories, Alex endeavors to answer readers’ deepest questions and doubts, while showing how the Holy Spirit . . .

  • advocates on their behalf, interceding when they don’t have the words to pray;
  • guides them toward healing, connecting spiritual health and emotional wellness;
  • helps them change mind-sets, to bring freedom from destructive labels and past experiences;
  • speaks with clarity and wisdom, helping believers discern His voice from their own; and
  • equips them to live in victory, empowering them to overcome.

With an infectious passion for this often misunderstood and overlooked person of the Trinity, Alex inspires readers to embrace the Holy Spirit as their closest friend and trusted counselor–the One they were created to know intimately. As they invite the ultimate Comforter into their everyday lives, this book will help readers experience lasting peace and live a life of freedom and joy.

About the Author

Alex Seeley was born and raised in Australia and spent 17 years pastoring there. It is also where she met and married her husband, Henry. After relocating to Nashville in 2012, they founded The Belonging Co., a church where they minister together to thousands of people each week. She is a passionate teacher of the Word with the unique ability to reveal how the Word of God is applicable to our everyday lives.

My Thoughts So Far

One aspect of this book that has been interesting is how Alex Seeley refers to the Holy Spirit.  She calls him Holy Spirit as if it's his name based on a remarkable encounter her husband had with Him during a Youth Camp.  It has changed my thinking to the point that I want to edit the book blurb and delete all of the "thes" before Holy Spirit!  And this truly helps illustrate the truth that "Holy Spirit Is Not a What, He's a Who" which happens to be the chapter of the book I'm currently reading.  I can't wait to read one of the latter chapters entitled Learning to Know His Voice.  Holy Spirit has spoken to me, but my problem is being still and listening for His voice.  Having quiet time to communicate with Him is becoming more of a priority for me.

Although I'm enjoying the personal anecdotes in the book (I skipped ahead a little to the chapter entitled "The Proof Is In the Pudding"), I am most appreciative of the the prayers and challenges at the end of each chapter.  I have flagged a couple of them, and I know I will refer back to them often.

And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.

~ John 14:16–17

This book needs to be on every Christian nonfiction shelf.  It's a lovely primer on Holy Spirit's love for us and the role He wants to play in our lives.  It is such a life changing and encouraging read.

What I'm Reading Wednesday: The Divine Counselor

Happy Book Mail Monday, My Lovelies!

Today I'm sharing a very special book with you:  Nero & Paul by Kathie Lee Gifford!

About Nero & Paul: How the Gospel of Grace Defeated the Ruler of Rome (Ancient Evil, Living Hope)

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Publication date: March 10, 2026

Print length: 240 pages

Does gaining power, possessions, and popularity lead to happiness and fulfillment? Or does inner transformation and self-sacrificial love bring the most joy and satisfaction? New York Times bestselling author Kathie Lee Gifford and scholar Bryan Litfin dive into these questions by bringing the stories of Nero and Paul to life in this creative nonfiction tale and identifying how these moral questions can be applied to modern Christian life.

Centuries ago, against the backdrop of Roman domination and decadence, a rabbi-turned-evangelist challenged the ideology of an immoral emperor. Two competing messages clashed—and they were messages that echo into our modern world.

One voice says, Do what feels good. Gain more influence. Focus on yourself and build your own kingdom. Another says, Live for something beyond yourself—something eternal. Carry out your God-given mission, no matter the cost. Follow your King to the end of the world if you must. Only then will you truly live.

Combining historical accuracy with narrative imagination, Nero and Paul drops you into the drama of human pride and divine destiny that unfolded on the stage of imperial Rome.

You’ll travel with Paul as he ventured from Jerusalem all the way to Spain, making friends, winning converts, and persisting through grueling opposition. You’ll see up close Nero’s kingdom of wealth, glamour, sex, and power—the proud trappings of a self-proclaimed god. In contrast, Paul boldly offered what the world desperately needed: the Messiah’s life-giving good news of God’s presence indwelling his people.

Though this epic clash of worldviews led to bloodshed and death, the crown of eternal life triumphed over the laurel wreaths of Rome—just as the light of Jesus triumphs over the darkness of the world in every age.

Don’t miss this ancient story with a timeless message that reverberates across the centuries and will light the fire of your faith today.

Happy Friday, My Lovelies!  I hope you are having a blessed week, and that you have been able to drink something hot and spend a few moments reading God's word.

In today's Literary Friday post, I'm sharing Beth Moore's Walking With God:  A Five-Week Journey In Step With the Savior.

Y'all, I must disclose that I am a huge fan of Beth Moore's Bible studies.  In fact, my very favorite Bible study of all time is her "A Heart Like His: Intimate Reflections on the Life of David."  It has been many years since I participated in the study with a small group at my church, but I still remember it vividly.  I love Beth's writing and teaching style: She truly has a gift for sharing God's word thematically.

I was thrilled when TLC Book Tours asked me to be apart of the team introducing and sharing Beth's new study.

About Walking With God: A Five-Week Journey in Step with the Savior

Publisher: Tyndale Momentum

Publication date: January 13, 2026

Print length: 256 pages

What does it really mean to walk with God–not just for a season, but for a lifetime? No two people in Scripture walked with God identically, and the same is true for all of us. Sometimes, a stretch of miles when God seems gloriously obvious can be followed by months of wondering where he’s gone. God has his own objectives for each season of our walks, and some of them will remain a mystery until we see his face.

Join New York Times bestselling author of All My Knotted-Up Life, Beth Moore, as she leads you on a five-week journey through Scripture to explore what walking with God looked like throughout the Biblical storyline:

  • the Beginning of Walking (Genesis)
  • the Law of Walking (Books of the Law)
  • the Heart of Walking (Psalms and Books of Poetry)
  • the Discipleship of Walking (Gospels)
  • the Spirit of Walking (Epistles)

Filled with Scripture-rich teaching, thought-provoking questions, practical application, and insightful personal reflections from Beth gleaned from a lifetime of walking with God, every page of this Bible study was designed to spark an awareness of God’s presence in your daily life.

Whether you’re just beginning your faith journey or have been walking with God for decades, this study will teach you to walk nearer and more attentively with God every day.

My Impressions:

I read several of the lessons in this book, and I love how it's organized.   You can see from the bullet points (above) the themes for all five weeks.  Each week has five lessons, and Beth draws scripture from other sections of the Bible to support each day's theme.  Her questions are not only thought-provoking, they are encouraging.  Beth Moore is an encourager, and if you don't feel encouraged after a Beth Moore study, then you just didn't pay attention.  I love how at the end of each week's study are pretty graphics that serve as a "Recordkeeper for Your Walk."  Another helpful feature is that all the questions and written activities in the book have plenty of room for your thoughts and answers.  It annoys me when studies don't have the appropriate amount of space to write.  There are even interviews scattered throughout the study the reader can access via QR codes.  One is with Cece Winans, one of my favorite Christian singers.

If your Secret Sister, small group, Sunday School class, or other group is looking for a Bible study to start this winter or spring, why not check this one out?  I do tend to get more out of Beth Moore's Bible Studies with a group because the discussion is always top-tier.  NOTE: Her streaming video sessions for this study are sold separately.

I hope I can talk my book club group at church into doing this study.  Ours are usually six weeks, so this one is the right length.  If not, I will do it on my own this spring.

DISCLOSURE:  I received a copy of Walking With God from the publisher via TLC Book Tours in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Until next time...

Happy reading!

Literary Friday: Beth Moore's Walking With God

Friday, January 30, 2026

Happy Monday, My Lovelies!   Did you have a nice weekend?  We enjoyed celebrating Father's Day with Mr. Bookish.  I think he enjoyed himself, too.

Today I'm sharing a little summer decor in our family room.  I decorated the Pressed Flower Work Table with tiny boxwood wreaths (the boxwood kind that doesn't smell bad) and maidenhair ferns.  I kill too many maidenhair ferns, but I love them so much!  I have actually been reading a book about how to care for them.  They're my favorite of all houseplants, and I like them in our home especially during summer.

This little planter holds a ribbon fern and a brake fern.

I also divided an arrowhead plant that was in one pot; now it's divided in three pots!  I've placed them on our hearth for now.  I might keep them there.

In our garden I had three small heirloom roses in a large container.  In years past they were doing well, but our trees have grown larger, and they weren't getting enough sun.  I moved them to their own individual pots, and I'm attempting to nurse them back to health.  I'll share an update later in the summer.

I needed to purchase replacement plants for the large pot that gets more shade than sun.  I asked for advice from our local nursery, and here's what we planted.  (We chose a few begonias that don't mind shade, and caladiums that doesn't mind a wee bit of sun.)

Large Container Recipe (Mostly Shade)

Begonia "Doublet White" (smaller flowers)
Begonia "Big White Green Leaf" (X2)
Heuchera "Berry Timeless" Coral Bells (attract hummingbirds and butterflies) (X2)
Wishbone Flower "Catalina Grape-O-Licious" (X2)
Variegated Large Leaf Periwinkle Vinca (X2)
Caladium "Aaron" sun or shade (white)
Caladium "Frog in a Blender" part sun

Aaron caldium

Frog in a Blender caladium

I've been reading about Beatrix Potter's Gardening Life:

This little gem of a book features not only her gardens, but her illustrations and her garden journal.

The same week I received this book, I got an email from Substack, and in the email I discovered my (now) favorite Substack blog called Noted.  The writer (Jillian Hess) features famous people's journals, diaries, and notebooks.  It's a fascinating read, and the featured notebook in the email was Beatrix Potter's!  I thought it was a sign, so I started following Noted.  Another favorite Substack blog is Sean of the South.  Do you follow anyone on Substack?  Please let me know in Comments if you do.

Here's to hoping our heirloom roses make it!

Until next time...

Blessings!
