Literary Friday: God Is In the Manger by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Friday, December 4, 2020

Happy Literary Friday, My Lovelies!  Today I'm sharing an Advent and Christmas daily devotional: God Is In the Manger by Dietrich Bonhoeffer.  I am enjoying it so far!

According to Goodreads:

"There are only two places where the powerful and great in this world lose their courage, tremble in the depths of their souls, and become truly afraid. These are the manger and the cross of Jesus Christ."

"No priest, no theologian stood at the cradle of Bethlehem. And yet, all Christian theology finds its beginnings in the miracle of miracles, that God became human."

These stirring words are among forty devotions that guide and inspire readers as they move thematically through the weeks of Advent and Christmas, from waiting and mystery to redemption, incarnation, and joy. Supplemented by an informative introduction, short excerpts from Bonhoeffer's letters, and passages from his Christmas sermons, these daily devotions are timeless and moving reminders of the true gift of Christmas.

My review (so far):

I am enjoying this devotional more than I ever imagined.  I have cheated and read ahead because Bonhoeffer does not mince words.  I know I'm reading the English translation of his thoughts from his native German, so I'm hoping that nothing has been lost in translation.  Dietrich Bonnhoeffer was a Lutheran pastor, theologian, and professor.  He was imprisoned during World War II and was eventually hanged as a traitor for his role in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler.  My favorite part of the book other than scripture are the excerpts from letters he wrote to his fiancĂ©e Maria von Wedemeyer while imprisoned.  These excerpts are hopeful and full of joy.  His writings focused on Christianity's role in a secular world, and his influence has only grown in recent years.  He was only 39 when he was executed.

Below are two other Advent devotionals I recommend.  They are IndieBound links for purchasing the books.
