St. Patrick's Day Decor in the Dining Room *plus* an Irish Recipe

Monday, March 11, 2013

This year I decorated the dining room for St. Patrick's Day, and I'll decorate the kitchen and family room for Easter this week.

The cookies are from Continental Bakery

Resources:
Plates, placemats, napkins, baskets, and shamrock crock:  Longaberger
Bowls:  Biscuit from Anthropologie
Small flower bowls, candle, and napkin rings:  Pier 1
Centerpiece:  Mosaicwares
Pilar candleholder:  Pottery Barn
Shamrock plates on stand:  Homegoods

Dinner Menu:
Guinness Stout Beef Stew
Corn muffins
Mixed greens salad
Shamrock cookies

Guinness Beef Stew

Ingredients:
1 bottle of Guinness stout beer
2 pounds stew meat
2 yellow onions, medium, diced
2 carrots, large, diced
6 new potatoes, large, diced
24 ounces beef broth
1 clove fresh garlic, minced
Rosemary and thyme to taste
1/2 stick butter
1 cup flour, seasoned with pepper
salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

1.   Place beef and flour in zipper bag.  Shake to cover beef with flour.

2.   Melt butter in large pot.  Place seasoned beef into pot and allow to cook to golden brown.

3.   Transfer meat to crock pot.  Add Guinness and beef broth to pot.  Add the vegetables and seasoning, and cook on high for four hours or low for six to eight hours.  Check it every so often in case you need to add a little water to the stew.

Serves: four

NOTE:
I posted this recipe before, but it was on a Q&A post.  I thought you might have missed it!
I didn't make a photo of the stew because it looks like vomit, but trust me.....it tastes really good!

  3. That beef stew sounds wonderful! I know for a fact my husband would love it. I'll run this one by him. Your dining room looks pretty and springy. :)

  4. Oh...so pretty! Love the shamrock placemats and napkins. Of course I recognize the Pier 1 stuff. I love those green flowers. I want those too. The dinner menu really sounds like fun. I haven't really celebrated St. Patrick's Day in a long time. We used to always have irish soda bread and guiness or green beer which was always terrible.

  5. Very cute! I love all the green and the plants are such a good idea. Those place mats are darling!

Your stew recipe looks so good. I love the ones that cook slow. I had to laugh about it looking like vomit...I find it very hard to photograph food, it looks just plain ugly!

  7. I suppose using my shamrock cookie cutter as a little decoration is really aiming far too low, and I ought to bake up some cookies! My green shamrock plants are all feeling blah, but the purple ones are very happy!

  17. I just realized I don't have any St. Patrick's Day decor. We usually just decorate for Easter.

I've decided I want to make a Guinness Chocolate Cake for Sunday.

  18. I don't think I'm going to be home on St. Patrick's Day this year. I usually cook a corned beef. I guess I'll have to cook it another day.

  21. Hi! I'm visiting from Kathleen's blog crawl! What a neat table! I LOVE the napkin rings! I don't think I've seen those at the local Pier 1 stores. They're really big...and I LIKE big on the table! :-) I often look at cookies like the ones you have here and wonder how on earth they manage to have such a steady hand to outline them like that. I have tried and tried, but mine turn out all wiggly every time! Have a safe and happy weekend!!!
