Happy Thursday, My Lovelies!  I am reading the best 30-day devotional I've read in a very long time:  A Sacrifice of Praise and Thanksgiving: 30 Days of Rejoicing in God's Goodness by Wendy Speake.

About A Sacrifice of Praise and Thanksgiving: 30 Days of Rejoicing in God’s Goodness

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Publication date: September 1, 2026

When life is bright and blessings abound, are you quick to feel grateful and lift a song of thanks to God? What about the seasons when heartache and hopelessness overwhelm, and deep soul-sadness threatens? When life feels awful, do you find it awfully hard to persevere in praise and rejoice in God’s goodness? Discover strength and renewal in times when praise feels more like a sacrifice than a natural overflow of the heart.

God’s Word is clear: we are to bless Him at all times! But it can be difficult when we don’t feel blessed—or are simply distracted by all of our blessings.

A Sacrifice of Praise and Thanksgiving will help readers:

  • Come honestly to the Lord regardless of life’s circumstances.
  • Witness the power of praise to break through spiritual barriers.
  • Rejoice in trials, knowing that they produce endurance, character, and hope.
  • Maintain a steadfast heart of worship when life feels unsteady.
  • Thank God for His character, even when we don’t understand His ways.

In the first half of this uplifting 30-day devotional, you will explore the profound gift that praising and thanking God is to you! Then, as you progress, you will shift your focus from those personal benefits to the One who is simply worthy of your worship.

Wendy Speake, bestselling author of The 40-Day Sugar Fast and The 40-Day Social Media Fast, invites you to consider “fasting from asking” along this journey. Yes, that’s right: For 30 days you’ll turn your petitions into praise as you lift your eyes from yourself and your circumstances to the praiseworthy and thankworthy One! This 30-day “ask fast” will teach you to give God your praise and thanks at all times, every day, even when it feels like a sacrificial offering.

About the Author

Whether on the stage or on the page, Wendy Speake ministers to women’s hearts through storytelling and biblical life application. With a background in Hollywood as a trained actress, she couples the power of God’s Word with personal testimony. Known for the uncanny way she meets women in their most common struggles, from sugar-addiction and mommy-anger to deep soul-sadness, Wendy uses every opportunity to point readers to the transforming power of God’s Word and the faithful nearness of His Holy Spirit.

Wendy is the author of multiple books, including The 40-Day Sugar Fast, The 40-Day Social Media Fast, and The 40-Day Feast. She’s also coauthor of the popular parenting books Triggers, Parenting Scripts, and Life Creative.

Though originally a California girl, Wendy now lives in the great state of Texas. When she isn’t ministering to others, Wendy enjoys gardening, taking walks in her neighborhood, and fixing meals for family and friends.

My Review

I am absolutely loving this devotional!  I was not sure that I would handle an "Ask Fast" very well, but it has actually been very freeing as I trust that God already knows what I need before I ask him.  It has been very refreshing to my soul setting aside all petitions/supplications and focusing on thanking and praising God.

I like how each daily devotion is organized.  Each lesson begins with scripture, followed by a lesson.  After the lesson there is a daily prayer and a guided journal activity.  Also, you can download Wendy's The 30 Days of Praise and Thanksgiving Journal for free!  HERE is the LINK.  The journal is 143 pages long, but there is plenty of room to write scripture and the guided journal assignments.  Some of the lessons also include meditation exercises and other thoughtful activities.  I emailed the journal to Kinko's and had them to print and bind it for me, but you can answer the questions and complete the activities in a composition notebook and use the journal on your computer as a guide.  I highly recommend using this free resource because it does enhance the devotional.

I have found it very difficult to live out the above verse in my faith walk.  Give thanks in EVERYTHING?  However, scripture admonishes us to do just that.  Wendy Speake has given us a very comprehensive handbook, and I can't think of a better devotional for any Christian who wants to grow her faith during the midst of trials.  I also enjoy Wendy's voice: I like how she writes!  She balances the biblical with personal anecdotes well, and her lessons are very engaging.  With Thanksgiving just over the horizon, I can't think of a better time of year to start this lovely devotional.  I highly recommend it, and I think it would make a thoughtful gift.

Have you read a devotional you'd recommend to my readers?  If so, please share in comments!

Happy Pub Day to The Heart of the Maker:  How to Put Your Passion to Work by Jake Weidmann.  This is my current read, and I am learning so much about how Jake worked very hard to improve his art and support his family through his efforts.

About The Heart of the Maker: How to Put Your Passion to Work

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Publication date: September 1, 2026

Unlock the transformation of your passion with the keys of purpose-driven work in The Heart of the Maker. Whether you’re an artist or entrepreneur, writer, weekend warrior or looking for a way to activate your calling, this book serves as a blueprint for turning creativity into meaningful action.

With hard-won lessons and a deep connection to the spiritual roots of creativity, this maker’s guide equips you with the tools to face uncertainty and emerge confidently into your creative calling.

Jake Weidmann, renowned self-taught artist and the youngest Master Penman in the world, wants to show you how to:

  • balance the sacred and the sellable in the business of soulful creation;
  • embrace your gift in less-than-ideal times and spaces for your making;
  • grow your skill while balancing the books, working with your spouse, dealing with stress, and fighting burnout;
  • discover the importance of faith, family, and relationships as the foundation for great art and a meaningful life;
  • grow closer to God by connecting with the spiritual roots of creativity;
  • see your challenges as a way to stretch your ingenuity; and
  • overcome self-doubt by trusting in God’s plan and stepping boldly into your unique creative purpose.

But this is more than a guide—it’s a call to action for anyone ready to leave behind the ordinary and make a lasting impact in their work and their life. With The Heart of the Maker, readers will learn how to view their creativity not just as a skill but as a gift, meant to be cultivated and shared to glorify God and bless others.

About the Author

Jake Weidmann – Jake is a professional artist and certified as one of nine Master Penmen in the world. Jake was certified through IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting) in July 2011. He holds the title as the youngest Master Penman by three decades and the youngest to ever attain the title. His journey into calligraphy has been the “special sauce” for everything he now creates, incorporating the traditional calligraphic flourishing into his fine art. Jake is self-taught in each of his disciplines (calligraphy, painting, drawing, woodworking, and engraving). While he typically works with private clients, Jake has worked with Apple, Inc., Crossway Books, and Biola University, and has spoken from countless stages including TEDx and Q, and was featured on the PBS series, A Craftsman’s Legacy.

My Thoughts So Far

The first thing I want to comment on is how organized the book is.  I love how the chapters (for the most part) have titles that relate to the artistic process.  Each chapter also builds from the previous ones, too.  So far my favorite chapter is entitled "Armature."  In this chapter, Jake does a lovely job of relating how our talents are part of God's purpose for our lives.  He stresses that we are to plan our work, and he gives a wonderful example from history of frescoes painted by daVinci and Michelangelo.  Da Vinci (unlike Michelangelo) tried to modernize the process, and many of his masterpieces fell apart during his lifetime.  Hence, a historical precedent can work as a type of "armature."  In order to be successful, you don't necessarily need to reinvent the wheel.  Planning also needs to involve God and his plans for us.  Sometimes it's hard to plan for our lives while concurrently surrendering to God's will.

If we want our lives to be modeled on and supported by God's purpose for us, then we need to take the time to identify exactly what that is.
~Page 85

Armature is an important element not only in the creative process, but also in the business and marketing processes as well.

In "Tools of the Trade," Jake emphasizes that the most important tools in our arsenals are our minds, bodies, and heart.  I love this section of the book so much because many creators are stuck in studios sitting down for a big part of the day.  I can remember reading an article years ago (before social media took off) entitled "Is Blogging Making You Fat?"  Jake has been taking care of his body since he was a chubby adolescent, and he even figured out a way to dictate parts of the book while exercising, including this very chapter!

The Heart of the Maker is so interesting, and I think it would be helpful for anyone who'd like to earn a living as a creative.  Jake Weidmann might be a Master Penman, but he is also a very creative and inspiring writer.  I highly recommend this book, and I am currently reading one of the latter chapters "Pray Your Work."  Y'all....this is so good.  You should buy it for the creative person in your life!  It's very helpful and encouraging.

Disclosure:  I received a hardcover copy of the book from the publisher via TLC Book Tours in exchange for a fair and honest review.  Thank-you so much for asking me to be a part of the tour, especially on Pub Day!

Orchid drawn with silverpoint

I think part of my problem as an artist is that I have way too many passions, like oil painting, colored pencil drawing, silverpoint, mixed media....you get the picture.
Maybe I can learn from this book to be a bit more focused and selective as an artist!  ;P

Until next time...

Happy reading and creating!

Happy Wednesday, My Lovelies!   On today's What I'm Reading Wednesday post I'm sharing The Happiness Crisis by Jonathan Eckert.  Although this book is written with the younger generation in mind (a super read for parents and grandparents), I think it would pair nicely with the book I featured this past Monday entitled Emotional Endurance.

About The Happiness Crisis: How Adversity Can Build a Resilient and Joyful Next Generation

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Publication date: August 4, 2026

Chasing what feels easy is a human instinct—but it’s only when young people embrace challenges that they become stronger versions of themselves and lead more joyful, meaningful lives.

In our happiness-obsessed society, we can become isolated in comfort zones and overly focused on temporary pleasures. Kids naturally do the same. In our effort to protect and help them, we often shield them from discomfort. But are we unwittingly denying them experiences that will form them into strong, capable adults? Could it be that we’re training them to believe that challenges ought to be avoided, and that if they’re struggling, they’re not well?

In The Happiness Crisis, global educational leader Jon Eckert speaks from decades of experience, explaining how he has seen parents, teachers, and coaches nurture transformation in kids ages 9 to 22. With practical wisdom, humor, and real-world evidence, he’ll show you how to

  • invite young people into challenges, risks, and adventures;
  • prioritize real-life connections that show others they matter;
  • resist living in echo chambers and chasing fleeting success; and
  • welcome kids into lives that move beyond circumstantial happiness to lasting joy.

Decades from now, the most resilient adults will be the most joyful. They’ll know that joy isn’t freedom from struggle; it’s the fuel that allows them to struggle well.

Young people can begin living that way now—if we invite them to.

My Thoughts

I agree: children should be challenged and taught how to deal with life's difficulties and failures.  Not everyone wins in spite of participation trophies.  And our victimhood culture does not help children grow and flourish.  From what I have read in this book, Jonathan Eckert does have some very good practical advice and strategies that have served young people well.  He shares these strategies along with his experiences implementing them.  My two favorite chapters are "Kids Grow Up by Doing Hard Thing" and "Stop Pushing Self-Care Culture on Kids."   As a Christian, I do believe that joy should be prioritized over happiness (one of his biggest points in the book).  I'm not sure that I agree with Eckert's belief on how "true joy" emerges.

Overall, this is an interesting book from a well-renowned educator.  If you are interested in how to help children and young adults better cope with our complicated world, you will find helpful information in this book.

About the Author

Jonathan Eckert has spent his career helping students become more of who they are meant to be. Now the Copple Professor of Educational Leadership at Baylor University and executive director of the Baylor Center for School Leadership, he first taught and coached intermediate and middle grade students outside of Chicago and Nashville. After earning a doctorate at Vanderbilt University, he served in the U.S. Department of Education under both the Bush and Obama administrations and later prepared teachers at Wheaton College. Jon and his wife, Carolyn, raised three kids and are about to be empty nesters. They are embracing Texas even if Jon still hasn’t bought boots or a cowboy hat.

Hello, My Lovelies!  How was your weekend?  I am currently spending time with my Little Starling, so I am in heaven!

Today I'm featuring Emotional Endurance: Faith-Fueled Skills for Bouncing Back by Leslie M. Bosserman.

About Emotional Endurance: Faith-Fueled Skills for Bouncing Back

Publisher: Zondervan

Publication date: July 28, 2026

Learn how to come back stronger and keep going when you experience setbacks and disappointment.

Why do some people bounce back from adversity while others stay stuck? We all face stress and setbacks, but not everyone recovers the same way. What makes the difference? Executive leadership coach, educator, and TEDx speaker Leslie M. Bosserman has spent decades helping people answer that question. Through research, experience, and her own personal journey, she’s identified the key: emotional endurance.

In Emotional Endurance, you’ll develop the mindset and skills to face life’s hardest moments and come out stronger, wiser, and more grounded. Based in psychological research and biblical truth, this practical and hope-filled guide offers a framework for building resilience that lasts. Soon you won’t just survive adversity; you’ll bounce back stronger with the skills to keep going.

Emotional Endurance offers practical tools and transformational results, including how to

  • develop inner strength and grit through six core principles and eighteen actionable skills;
  • recover from failure, turn it into a source of strength, and use it to fuel your growth;
  • build resilience that lasts beyond a single crisis;
  • access hope to heal from emotional wounds;
  • replace fear and paralysis with courage and clarity;
  • learn to manage your energy by anticipating what drains you and making space for what restores you; and
  • find strength to endure challenges by standing firm in your clearly defined purpose.

This book is a perfect gift for anyone going through a difficult season, friends facing burnout or transition, graduates stepping into uncertain futures, small groups or book clubs focused on personal growth, or leadership retreats and team-building sessions.

Real strength isn’t about avoiding hard things. It’s about moving forward with emotional steadiness when life gets tough. Emotional Endurance equips you with the mindset and resilience to keep going, keep growing, and come out stronger on the other side. Your bounce-back starts here.

Meet the Author

Leslie M. Bosserman, M.Ed., CPCC, is the founder of Lead With Intention® where she coaches and trains teams on the science of emotional endurance.

She is a TEDx speaker, executive leadership coach, and creative entrepreneur who believes success should be based on fulfillment, not retirement.

Leslie is living her best life in Northern California, where she runs The Makers Place™, an innovative coworking space with onsite childcare.

When she isn’t coaching, writing, or folding endless piles of laundry, you can find her enjoying the perfect cup of local coffee while parenting three young children.

My Thoughts

I think the book blurb above is very well-written and succinct.  I don't want to repeat any of it here, so I will share a couple of thoughts.  My first impression is that emotional endurance can be achieved because the six principles which lead to it each have three skills that enables the reader to achieve them.  Skills are learned behavior.  Anyone can learn a skill and be successful with perseverance and practice.  This is why I think this book is useful and should be helpful to readers.  The principle that intrigues me most is Principle Four:  Courage to Change.  We are creatures of habit, and sometimes those habits can hold us back and prevent growth from happening.  One of the skills in this section is Expand Your Comfort Zone.  I think as Christians we are often called to do just that.  At the end of each principle's section is a Reflect + Connect guided journaling activity with helpful prompts for reflection and action.  This book is a lovely resource for anyone at any stage of life who could use encouragement to let go and move forward.  I think it helps put hope into practice.

Happy Wednesday, My Lovelies!

Today's What I'm Reading Wednesday Post is all about A Thousand Painted Hours by Barbara O'Neal.  I have read several of O'Neal's novels, and she never disappoints.  However, this one might be my very favorite.  If you are interested in reading more of my reviews of her books, just type her name in the search engine (the magnifying glass) at the top of my page.

First of all, I love receiving book mail that is so pretty.  The mailer matches the book cover!

The book came with a letter from Barbara and the pretty postcard which is so appropriate given that the novel is partly epistolary.

About A Thousand Painted Hours

Publisher: Lake Union Publishing

Publication date: August 11, 2026

534 pages

According to Goodreads

An epic, emotionally charged novel about love, art, and survival spanning 1900s colonial India to Blitz-era London by the USA Today bestselling author of When We Believed in Mermaids.

In the shadow of the London Blitz, artist Elsie Turner clings fiercely to her canvases, refusing to let war dim the colors that define her. The bombs test her nerve, but the struggle also stirs memories of her golden youth in India and of the long-lost love of her life.

The daughter of a British civil servant in the Himalayan station of Nainital, Elsie crosses cultural divides to forge an unlikely bond with Tanveer Singh, a Sikh prince with hopes, dreams, and far-reaching ideas. What begins as shared sketchbooks and stargazing becomes first love and a secret correspondence. When Elsie’s father is summoned to England, Elsie is severed from the world she knows—and is determined to preserve it through both her art and a connection with Tanveer that endures through the most tumultuous years of their lives.

Across four decades and two continents, Elsie navigates a journey from lush colonial India to war-torn London, amid landscapes of beauty, protest, and peril. As past and present collide, the most impossible choices and sacrifices are yet to be made in the name of love, war, and survival.

About Barbara O’Neal

Barbara O’Neal is the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Amazon Charts bestselling author of twenty novels of women’s fiction, including the #1 Amazon Charts bestseller When We Believed in Mermaids, as well as The Last Letter of Rachel Ellsworth, Memories of the Lost, This Place of Wonder, and The Starfish Sisters. Her award-winning books have been published in more than two dozen countries. She lives on the wild Oregon Coast with her husband, a British endurance athlete who vows he’ll never lose his accent. My Review

A Thousand Painted Hours is the historical novel you’ve been looking for to complete your summer reading adventure.  It’s an epic love story that survives two world wars and defies class expectations.  Partly epistolary and entirely magical, Elsie and Tanveer’s story will stay with you for a very long time.  My heart is full from having read it!

Barbara O'Neal paints her story with vivid imagery, exotic scents, and heart-stopping sounds.  The novel is a work of art that would make Elsie and her Bohemian artist friends proud!  I enjoy novels with a true sense of place, and O'Neal's descriptions of the Indian countryside in the foothills of the Himalayas;  London during the height of the Blitzkrieg;  and English country estates before and after the Great War are intricately and perfectly depicted.  The characters, especially the two main ones, Elsie and Tanveer, are so well-drawn and complex.  Their worlds and their roles in them are also complicated and seemingly at odds.  And yet....

Sometimes in character-driven novels the plot can suffer.  That isn't the case in A Thousand Painted Hours.  There are so many unexpected plot twists, and a few characters do not behave as expected.  There is plenty of family drama and secrets impacting Elsie, and the back and forth in time paired with her correspondence with (primarily) Tanveer slowly reveal a surprising and very satisfying ending.

There is so much beauty in this story, and it isn't just from the art.  If you enjoy an epic historical with a love story for the ages, then this is your book.  I highly recommend it!
