Literary Friday: My Next Project!

Friday, September 7, 2012

This week I read a book that was released with quite a bit of hype last year.  I have had the book for months, but I just got around to reading it this week.  It was so bad.  I was so disappointed. I first heard about it on NPR, and usually their book reviews are fairly reliable.  This one wasn't.  :(

Because I don't even want to discuss the suckish book I read this week, and I am still angry over the lost hours I will never get back, I want to focus on something totally *cool*

This is my next project:

Photobucket

So.  Flipping.  Cool.

So you'll never believe where I saw this:  On Led Zeppelin's Swan Song page on Facebook!  I have no idea if this is in Jimmy Page's home....the post was unclear.  But I love it! It won't be easy choosing the book spines I paint, so I will ask my family members to contribute their favorite books, too.

I hope some of you will link-up today.  I want to read about some *good* books!  I will be linking back to the most recent book I enjoyed most.

Until next time...

Blessings!
Ricki Jill

  1. I have had those stairs pinned for a long time. They are incredible! No sooner did I tell my daughter, "Ricki could paint those"...I realized you ARE going to paint them! They are going to be beautiful. Good luck, I can't wait to see them!

The stairs are phenomenal and will totally rock in your house.

    1. Okay....I'll spill....the book that I was so disappointed in: The Great Night by Chris Adrian. It is a retelling of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the setting is modern-day Buena Vista Park in San Francisco. The fairy's storyline is good in spite of Puck's being evil incarnate, but the mortals' storyline is awful. The play that the homeless people are practicing (like Bottom's play from AMSND) is a musical version of Soylent Green. I still have nightmares about that movie! UGH!!!! DOUBLE UGH!!!!!

  5. Hi,

The stairs look really cool in the right place in the right house.

We've been in this house for more than 30 years. The woman who owned it before us was an artist. She painted the stairs between the second and third floors (third floor was servant's quarters originally, but our boys' area when we moved in) in a similar fashion and we have had to keep them covered with carpet all these years. We could have the wood stripped and refinished, but opted for carpet which was quieter with boys running up and down. The stairs lead off of a formal hall with ionic columns, leaded glass, and crystal chandeliers. The orange, red, yellow on the facing boards of the stairs just didn't work! The woman was NUTS!

  7. Ricki Jill,
I love this idea! And you're the talented artist that can pull it off. Be sure to keep up updated on which books you select and the finished stairs.
I hate it when that happens, you buy the hype and then keep wondering when the book will redeem itself. I like your "save" of a crummy experience.
    Have a great weekend.

  8. Oh Man, Sorry your book was so bad, but wow I am excited about your next project. I've seen that a few times on Pinterest and love it. What books are you going to depict? I can't wait to see your finished product.

  10. Are you first going to prepare the image and then transfer or decoupage or actually lay sideways? I get a chuckle over the 2nd option:)

  13. So cool, but yes, it would require a lot of thought. My initial reaction was, "Oh, an Outlander series staircase!" but the cover colors might be too much for the average home! Can't wait to see what you do.

  17. It's such a disappointment when you read a book that is not as expected. I have just done the very same. A lady at my writers group wrote and published her memoirs, and while it was well written, it was not a nice book to read.
thank you for visiting and for your nice comment. I like the groovy stairs too. x

  26. Hi Ricki Jill: I am blown away by those stair risers--now I want to do that for our basement stairs--so cool! It does suck when you get to the end of a bad book and realize that that was all there was to it. Here's to better books in the very near future. I've been reading more non-fiction lately, so I don't have a good suggestion at the moment, but if I think of one I'll share it. Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving a sweet comment--I do appreciate it!

  27. Oh my I haven't read anything but magazines lately and barely those. Life has been so busy so I am boring and have nothing to share. I did start a favorite that I read every year when we were on the coast but need to get back into it.

  29. Don't you hate it when you are prepared for greatness and the book is a disappointment? I have to admit I put them down and move on the next...life's too short to read bad books! Love the stair treads :)
