Happy New Year and Happy Eighth Day of Christmas, My Lovelies!

It's been a minute since I posted because December has been extremely busy, and I had five minor surgeries all requiring anesthesia.  (Nothing serious, but they needed to be done.)  I also hosted Christmas, and it was so nice having the family together for ten days.

This year's Christmas decor theme everywhere but the dining room was peppermint and gingerbread.

I was very surprised looking back on my five most popular posts of 2024.  They are:

If you missed any of these posts, use the links if you're interested!

Clearly the tablescape posts are winners.  But it was a shock that a bookish post was Number Two, and I was also pleased that one of my CSA posts made the Top Five.

This Friday I will post a review of my very favorite books of 2024;  it has been a phenomenal reading year for me!

Next week I'll share a few of my goals and aspirations for 2025 for myself and the blog.

Stay tuned!

Until next time...

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year and a 2024 Blog Recap

Wednesday, January 1, 2025

It's January 6th, so Happy Epiphany, My Lovelies!  Today our Eastern Orthodox brothers and sisters in Christ celebrate Christmas.  Today also marks the beginning of the Mardi Gras Season.

Do you like my blog's makeover?  I hope you do, and that it's easier for you to navigate and read.

I am enjoying the New Year so far...how about you?  I'm looking forward to participating in new experiences (God willing), and getting involved in organizations that impact our nation for good, like DAR.

Yesterday and today I put away all our Christmas decor with the exception of a few red things I like to leave out through Valentine's Day.   I did move our village tea set to the breakfast room, and although the little houses are decorated for Christmas, I think I'll leave them out for us to enjoy a little longer.  I like the rooftop lids because they keep my hot drinks warm.

I replaced the green candle with a red one after I took this photo.

Most of our poinsettias are sill looking great!  I don't have the heart to throw them out yet.

I'm beginning to decorate for Valentine's Day and Mardi Gras.  I have also put put a few snowy scenes and snowballs around the house, like this snowball garland:

I also like decorating with white flowers during winter.

I haven't put together a Mardi Gras tablescape yet, but I did make a super-easy Mardi Gras centerpiece.  I used primroses (my local nursery is full of them).  I chose yellow and purple because Mardi Gras colors are gold, purple, and green.

You can keep the primroses in their nursery pots and slip them into a container, like the little vine and moss market bag, above.  Or you can place them in plain terracotta pots with saucers and line a few down the middle of a table runner.

The colors are perfect for Mardi Gras.

Because today is the first official day of the Mardi Gras season, King Cakes are back in stores and bakeries.

I found the cutest book about finding happiness throughout the year: The Happiness Year by Tara Ward.   I like it because there are nature lessons in it and unique ideas for seasonal activities.

I'm starting with winter, of course, and it's the last chapter of the book.
If I try any of the activities from the book I'll share them here on the blog or on Instagram

Speaking of Instagram:  If you have an account, would you please follow me, and I'll follow you back!  My Instagram follow button is on the righthand footer at the bottom of my blog.

I enjoy learning new things, and recently I learned that there are two main types of colored pencils:  waxed based and oil based.  I had no idea!  I have always drawn with Prismacolor Colored Pencils, and I do like them.  They are very user friendly and blend beautifully.  However, since they are wax based, there is a wax "bloom" that leaves a waxy film over drawings.  This is especially noticeable when there are dark colors used on a drawing.

I have been playing around with oil based colored pencils, and I am loving them even though they took some getting used to.  Below is a drawing of a rose I drew using oil based colored pencils.

This rose was drawn on Strathmore Colored Pencil Paper with Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor oil-based pencils.
The dark areas on the stems, leaves, and petals will remain dark without the wax bloom.
Mr. Bookish bought me a very large set of these pencils for Christmas, and I am so grateful for his generous gift.  He is very encouraging, and wants me to continue taking art classes and perhaps even taking a couple of workshops this year.

I'm very happy to report that art class is so much fun with everyone back in person.  I am currently working through a realism book entitled The Realism Challenge by Mark Crilley.  Mark has a popular YouTube channel featuring videos of how he recreates items through his drawings.

On the cover, the real items are on the left, and his drawings are on the right.

This is the first challenge in the book: a piece of paper.
The real paper is on the left, and Mark's drawing is on the right.  Mine is on the Strathmore colored pencil paper.

I drew this picture with Faber-Castell colored pencils.
I have a small set I like to take to class.

Do you have a word of the year?  Here is mine:

There are many things I want to explore in 2023.
Stay tuned!

If you do have a word of the year or maybe a New Year's resolution, please share in comments!

Until next time...

Blessings!

Getting cozy in the art studio

Happy Tuesday, My Lovelies!  I did not pick "cozy" as my word of the year, but mayhap I should've done so.  We had a Snow Day yesterday here in Central Alabama!  Check it out:

See Mrs. Powers on the gate?  She's Southern, and needs a nice wool scarf, LOL!

Roses in the snow....a wee bit worried about them, but they've probably suffered worse abuse during summer.

Now on to my Word of the Year:

*drum roll*

I chose this word back in September when I received a notification for this book, and I ordered one for me and one for Shelley.  We had planned to go to a spa in February, but we've had to postpone that trip:

I gave Shelley's to her for Christmas.  I think it will be fun for us to work through this guided journaling and share with each other.

I found the cutest notepad at Anthropologie.  Check it out!  I'm sharing today's plans with you, but they are top secret and you are NOT allowed to share them with anyone:

The pages or perforated so I can rip this one off tomorrow.
I think this little notepad will help me maintain my self-care as well as other goals.

I love yoga, and I've made it a goal this year to do more of it.   I also love Yoga With Adriene, so I've signed-up for her 2022 Thirty Day Challenge:

Adriene with her sidekick Benji
The Westies always bark at Benji whenever he makes an appearance.  They want to be his friend!

I also have a goal to continue my teacup and teapot series.  Here is my latest one.  It's smaller, and I only have two layers of paint, so it needs lots more work.

My only requirement is that the subject must have gilding on it somewhere.
Unless I paint a MacKenzie-Childs piece which is very possible....

However, I'm still wondering whether or not cozy would make a better word of the year.  Maybe it can be self-care's understudy.  For example, I'm going to keep my book Christmas tree up for a long time because the little lights make me happy.

Speaking of Christmas trees...I've seen how some of y'all remove your Christmas ornaments and leave your lighted trees up during winter.  I am going to steal borrow that idea, I think.  I can remove the ornaments, and replace our Christmas red and green skirt for a quilted white one I use for the library's tree.

What do you think?

If I do that I'll post a photo, I promise.

But for now, we're enjoying most of our Christmas decorations through Epiphany.

In closing, I will be burning many more candles this year.  This is an actual goal of mine for the year.  Non-scented, mostly, but I do like scented candles in the kitchen.  I burned an oatmeal cookie candle all during Christmas.  I think I might light the Espresso one next.  I purchase them at Anthropologie, and they are by a company called Boulangerie

Hmmmm.....Methinks the Vanilla Fig would smell lovely, too...
I like the way they look in my kitchen, but most of all I love the way they smell!

I promise I will not burn the house down with the candles.

I also have a few goals regarding books, but I will share them with you tomorrow because this post is long enough.  ;P  Tomorrow's post will be a synopsis of my books for 2021 as well as goals for 2022.  I'm combining the two topics for your reading pleasure.

Do you make New Year's resolutions?  Do you care to share yours if you do?  Do you make goals?  Do you have a word of the year?  I'm a Nosy Nellie and I want to know.  Tell me all about it in comments.  And if you think that Words of the Year and the whole ball of wax is stupid, I want to know that, too.  This is a safe space.  Promise.  No judgment.

Until next time...

Blessings!

Happy New Year, My Lovelies!

My Michigan children are leaving today, so stay tuned for a Best of 2021 post early next week (it will take me a couple of days to write it).  I hope you have a healthy, happy, and productive 2022!

Until next time...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It's a new year, and I for one am happy that 2020 is history!  I am hopeful for a better year, are you?

My word of the year for 2021 is gratitude.  :D

I will be participating in The Weekly Gratitude Project.  This will help me reflect on my blessings and approach God with gratitude and thanksgiving.

I don't have any new year's resolutions, only plans to create more art and plan fun activities with my family.

I'm happy to be painting again using M. Graham paints.  They aren't toxic because walnut oil is the binder and medium.  I will continue my silverpoint drawings because I love it!

I have a new blog strictly for my silverpoint art.

We're enjoying a relaxing weekend at home, so I decorated a little Happy New Year tablescape in our breakfast room.  I still have most of our Christmas decorations still up, and they will stay up through Epiphany.  I took the photos on Wednesday because it was so sunny, and I loved seeing the sunshine in our kitchen.  I know they aren't the best because they are so bright, but I honestly don't care because it was *sunny*

I used a simple table runner, a pair of candlesticks, and a cheese server with five white vases filled with baby's breath.

Resources:

Table runner:  Shabby Chic
Cheese server (holding vases), white thistle vases, candlesticks, salt and pepper set, napkin holder:  Mackenzie-Childs
White vase trio:  Southern Living
Santa cocktail napkins: Caspari

Just so you know...I am very grateful to you, My Lovelies!  I will definitely be blogging more in 2021 (both writing and reading) since I am off all social media.

Until next time...

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year 2021!

Happy New Year 2020, My Lovelies!

Normally I do not look forward to new years...mostly because January is my least favorite month!

This year is different.

This year I could not wait for 2020.  I am hopeful that it will be one of the best years for our family.  I am looking forward, not back.  I will not post a 2019 wrap-up:  The only exception I'll make is posting about my favorite books of 2019.

Maybe a couple of the books above will be included on the list.  Check back in a few days to see!

In years past, I've made all kinds of lofty plans with my blog, things I've wanted to accomplish and share with my readers.  And you know what?  In every instance these topics have fallen flat with my readers.

I'm not doing that this year.  Nope!

This year, my blog will be unplanned, a true journal of my life and what I'm learning.  I might participate in links, especially with my Tales of the Traveling Tote group, and I will review a few books via TLC Book Tours, but that's as planned as this little blog will be.

This year, my inspirational word is FAITH.  I have been terribly upset about the state of the world that is way beyond my control, and I have spent too much time researching a couple of topics, especially child trafficking.  For my own mental health, I'm taking a break from reading about it, and I'm focusing on faith-based books and a few fun fiction selections.  I will be highly selective about what I read in 2020!

And if, on occasion, I want hot chocolate for lunch, so be it!  There's protein in milk, and the Kool-Whip is lite!  ;p

Moving on, I want to share with you

Five Things To Do In January

1.   Grow an indoor garden by forcing bulbs.

Some of you might have read my Advent post about forcing bulbs.  It was my first try at it, and I was skeptical.  But look:

Aren't they lovely!
I'm forcing even more bulbs this month!

After I posted my Advent post, I found an article via Cottages and Bungalows Magazine that has more tips, like adding vodka to the water once the bulbs begin to flower.  This prevents the stems from growing too long and falling over.  Who knew?  You can read the article HERE.

2.   Join the Goodreads 2020 Reading Challenge

I have joined this challenge for several years now, and I think it's a good way to keep-up with what I've read.  This year my goal is to read 36 books.  Three per month will be slightly challenging because this will be a busy year for us.  But if I don't reach my goal, so what?  I am determined to read QUALITY OVER QUANTITY this year!

3.   Join the Thirty Day Yoga Challenge with Adriene

I have participated in Yoga with Adriene's Thirty Day Challenge for three years now, and I love it!  This year's theme is HOME which is perfect for at-home practice.  Here is a LINK to Adriene's site.
I love Adriene.  Her lessons have changed my life!

4.   Read a cozy mystery

Here are two I can recommend.  I haven't chosen the one I'll be reading yet.

5.   Make plans to have coffee with a friend you haven't seen in a long time.

I get it.  We are all busy.  But social media is a very poor substitution for seeing a friend in the flesh, for realsies.  And if coffee isn't your thing, what about hot tea?  Anything hot, because it's January!

That's it for now!  I am choosing to be optimistic about 2020.  What about you?

Please make sure to visit me on January 15th for a very special post!  You won't want to miss it!

Until next time...

Blessings!
