Literary Friday: 31 Verses to Write On Your Heart by Liz Curtis Higgs

Thursday, March 4, 2021

Happy Literary Friday, My Lovelies!

Today I'm sharing with you a sweet little book by prolific Christian writer Liz Curtis Higgs: 31 Verses to Write On Your Heart.  I thought it would be a good idea to read this book during Lent, and since March has 31 days, it would be a nice book to read right after my daily devo (devo is short for devotional).  Speaking of devos...there's a small group of us who read Sarah Young's Jesus Calling devo everyday, and we would love for you to join us!

According to IndieBound:

Let His Truth Find a Home in Your Heart...

Here are the words of hope you’re looking for when your faith needs a boost or a friend needs encouragement. Chosen by more than a thousand women as their favorite verses in the Bible, each one is worth learning, worth sharing, worth remembering.

You’ll find verses you already know and love: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13). Others may be less familiar but are no less powerful: “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe” (Proverbs 29:25). All of them capture the truth of God’s goodness, mercy, and love for His own.

Bestselling author Liz Curtis Higgs invites you to experience —
 * a deeper, richer understanding of thirty-one treasured verses.
 * a fresh look at how these timeless truths can impact your life.
 * a new passion for memorizing Scripture, verse by verse.
 * thirty-one creative ways to keep them in your heart forever.

With a study guide included, 31 Verses to Write on Your Heart is a daily devotional and a small-group Bible study, wrapped in a lovely gift book overflowing with joy!

"When you spend time in God's Word, life starts making sense. The broken places inside you begin to heal. Darkness and discouragement give way to the light of hope. Your purpose becomes clearer, and your desire to make a difference grows. The Bible can do all that? It can. It will. Just begin. Go slowly. Stand on tiptoe, anticipating all God has in store for you. "

My Review:

Liz Curtis Higgs asked her social media followers to share with her their favorite Bible verses.  She received around a thousand responses, and the most mentioned verses are included in the book.  Not only is the book a wonderful Bible study, it also has several good ideas on how to use it, either as a personal devotional or as a group Bible study.  The study guide in the back of the book provides a couple of questions (mostly application) that are perfect for discussion and Bible journaling.  Each of the 31 chapters focuses on a verse and includes commentary and a tip for memorizing scripture.  Most of the tips are very creative!

I also like how Higgs encourages her readers to read the verses from many different translations because some translations might be easier for memorizing verses than others.  There's also a spot in each chapter for you to write your favorite translation, just another reason to appreciate this book.  Each chapter ends with a sweet prayer.  I am very happy I purchased 31 Verses to Write On Your Heart mainly because of its flexibility.  My most quoted verse in our home actually made it into the book, so I guess it must be my favorite since I quote it often (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:11
