101st Rose Sunday

Monday, September 12, 2016

Happy Monday Morning, My Lovelies!  I hope you all had a peaceful weekend.  Ours was wonderful.

Yesterday was a very special day not only for our country but for our family.  It was the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.  Fifteen years ago, Mr. Art @ Home went to the airport early on September 11th.  When he got to the airport and opened his wallet at the counter, it was empty. He was not very thrilled because he needed to fly to New York City for a meeting.  I had driven carpool, and I was on my way home when the first plane hit the World Trade Center.  Upon arriving home, Mr. Art was there seething about the missing contents of his wallet.  Shelley had emptied his wallet and placed everything in a small basket in our dining room (she was in K-4 at the time).  We had turned on Good Morning America to see what had happened in New York, and about that time the second plane hit the second tower. Soon after our minister called asking about Mr. Art because he knew about Mr. Art's plans for that morning.  It turned out to be a good thing that Mr. Art missed his flight because his intended flight was diverted to Nova Scotia.

Fast forward (and it does seem like the time passed by quickly) we're in Marion, Alabama for the 101st Rose Sunday at Shelley's College.  What is Rose Sunday?  According to the Judson College website:

On the first Sunday of each academic year, Judson students, faculty, and staff attend a special worship service honoring God’s provision for the College and the determination of Judson’s founders. The service takes place at Siloam Baptist Church, the church that Judson’s founders attended. Seniors wearing academic regalia and red roses walk through an ivy chain woven by underclassmen as they join the President, who leads the procession to the church.  Rose Sunday was first observed on September 19, 1915.

What a beautiful (but hot) day!  Judson's President Dr. Potts delivered a wonderful sermon meant to encourage the girls about Christ's power in their lives based on Paul's thanksgiving and prayer in Ephesians 1.

Here are some photos:

Until next time...

  4. Shelley looks so sweet and happy in her little floral frock! (and so French, I might add!) Your story about 9/11 is very touching. I guess we all have one. I have written mine before a couple of times on the blog, so I didn't mention it this time because I guess I think people might remember. Your husband was a lucky duck that day, wasn't he?
