Thoughts of Home

Friday, October 9, 2015

Lately I've been preoccupied with thoughts of home.   This might seem normal to you because I homeschool, and we do spend quite a bit of time at home. But I can't quite put my finger on it....

Maybe it's the season.  After a summer filled with boating, swimming, and lazy evenings on the glider on the porch, it's time to turn our focus on the holidays and cocooning indoors for a few months.

Or maybe my preoccupation is because Shelley is a senior, and she might go away to college next year.  What will my girls remember about the home they grew-up in?  What are the smells, sounds, and feelings that remind them of home?

Will they remember Shanley Belle's baking obsession that made the house smell like vanilla?

Will they remember afternoon snacks at the breakfast bar telling me all about their day?

Will they remember all the creative projects, tea parties, and play?
I truly hope so.

Homeschooling is time consuming.  I hope Shelley can see past school and all the assignments and chores and remember that it's her home first and foremost.

The past month or so "fluffing the nest" as Mr. Art @ Home calls it has been put on the front burner in an almost obsessive way.

Apparently Finlay the King can sit anywhere he likes...

Maybe my thoughts have been influenced by two of my best friends in the world who have moved during the past year.  Although I am happy for them as both moves are blessings, I miss them terribly.

Or perhaps I've read so many amazing blog posts lately about decorating, gardening, home improvement, culinary arts, Halloween, autumn, etc.  You all do inspire me, and I learn so much from you.

I also wonder if our home truly reflects who we are, and what interests us.  Do you ever wonder about that?

One thought about home is that I feel blessed.  I love our home, quirks and all...

I suppose the reason for my preoccupation with home doesn't really matter.  But what does matter is that we continue to enjoy our home and each other...

Please share with me your thoughts of home by leaving a comment.  You'll make my weekend if you do!

Until next time...

Blessings!

  1. Thoughts of home is a perfect theme as we enter the fall season. It's still warm here in TX during the afternoons, but mornings and evenings definitely have a touch of fall in the air. I've been pulling out a bit of Halloween and adding velvet pumpkins into a few vignettes here and there in the house. Love this time of year!

  2. I always think of fall almost like a new year. A new beginning after our hot long darn summers of late.

  3. This is the perfect time to nest---after summer we retreat to the indoors and we want comfy and cozy.

I feel for you with your thoughts on the empty nest-even if it's temporary. My youngest flew the coop a few months ago. I found a small amount of peace in less to clean up, less demands on my grocery list and meal planning, and more time with my husband without distraction or diversion. Still, when she comes for the weekend, or the others visit, I so appreciate it. It's an adjustment but if you try hard, you'll find your way.

  4. Oh-I love being home, Ricki, an decorating for fall and the upcoming Holidays. It is just a different stage of life when the kids move out -not as much BAD as different. You will take on different projects and find new outlets for your creative soul. Those girls will remember it all---trust me---they will.
Hope you have a blessed weekend. xo Diana

  5. Yes, your girls will remember all those good things. And the blessing is that they forget the temper tantrums or less than stellar mom days that we have. ♥

  7. I cannot imagine your girls NOT remembering great times at home. Fluffy can wait, time with family is wonderful. Me, I am beginning to feel at home.

  8. My girls were in their late 20's when all of a sudden they started to talk about special things we did many years earlier (some that I had forgotten about)...so it will come back to you!! There is something homey about autumn and staying in our warm safe homes!!
