This week I read The Beekeeper's Daughter by Santa Montefiore. I enjoy her books, and you can read my review of The French Gardener here.

The Beekeeper's Daughter is one of my favorite multigenerational books ever. I absolutely love Grace (the beekeeper's daughter). She's a wonderful wife and mother, and the parallels her life and her daughter Trixie's life share are astonishing. Grace has kept a secret love hidden in her heart since World War II, and the details of the entire story aren't revealed until Trixie travels to England in the nineties in search of answers from her own lost love Jasper.
The two settings, the English countryside and a small (fictitious) island off the cost of Massachusetts, are magical and perfect for each love story. The characters are well-drawn, and a climactic plot twist comes out of nowhere. I certainly wasn't expecting it: it was totally unpredictable. Being an American, I've always been morbidly fascinated with the British Class System. A big driver of the plot, it does tend to disappoint me when love is cast aside out of "duty." But the plot twist and the book's ending make-up for those disappointments. Strong women who persevere, accomplish goals, and find the courage to love again usually make for a good read.
Montefiore reminds me a little of Kate Morton, although she isn't quite as literary. If you enjoy Morton's books, you'll probably enjoy The Beekeeper's Daughter.

It sounds like a good one, for sure- and it caught Fedora's attention when I played the blurb, as it sounds like it's narrated by Emma Watson (from Harry Potter the movie series). :D
