Literary Friday: A Paris Affair

Friday, August 21, 2015

This week I read A Paris Affair by Tatiana de Rosnay...and I wish I hadn't.  She wrote The House I Loved and Sarah's Key, two books I loved!  But A Paris Affair is terrible.  *sadface* It in no way resembles what the blurb says.  I hate it when that happens!

First of all, I find it kind of funny how I read this book the same week that the hackers released the Ashley Madison accounts information because the book is basically a collection of short stories about how cheaters get caught and their spouses' reactions.  The book's only redeeming quality is that each affair is discovered in a unique way, usually with the help of technology.  But honestly the characters in the book were all so awful, and I'm not just talking about the cheaters.  I didn't like any of the characters in the stories.

If there's anything we can learn from this week's events and this collection of short stories is this: If you cheat in today's world you will get caught.  Period.  A day is coming when even our private electronic communication will be public, mark my words.  After all.....if the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency can't keep his affair secret,  ordinary citizens shouldn't be so arrogant as to think that they can.  My advice:  Don't kid yourself. Only cheat if you don't care about getting caught.

I hope you read a better book than I did this week.  Please share if you did.  This is a link party!

Until next time...

Happy reading!

  1. I've read other books by this author and enjoyed them too. I'll be sure to skip this one! There are too many great books and too little time! I'm linked this week! Thanks for the fun party my friend. Enjoy your day! Sweet hugs and happy reading, Diane

  2. I'm glad when readers post an honest review. I haven't read any of the previous books.
We have a court case going on right now in Canada, about how some prominent Conservatives tried to cover up a payout to a Senator. The cheaters and lies are being caught out with some of the testimony. Why can't folks just be honest ... oh wait, they are politicians.

  3. I'm sorry this book wasn't as good as hoped for- I was actually looking at it last week, and now I'm glad I passed it by! I hope that cheaters and folks who choose their own wants over the harmony, health and needs of others get caught. I also hope they get punished, but I don't see much of that in the public circus. :/

  4. Hi,
I read Sarah's Key as well. I thought it well done. I also watched the movie.

I started this book, and did not finish. I totally agree with your review.

  5. I hate a book (or a movie) where I just can't identify with the characters.

  7. I'm sorry this book didn't work out. It always makes me sad when I find a book I don't enjoy, by an author I usually like. Hope the next read is better!
