Happy Tuesday, My Lovelies!  I have so much to be happy about, but these are things that are holdovers from March.  Isn't it funny how sometimes life gets in the way of blogging?

We celebrated a really big anniversary in March.  Mr. Sketchy Reader did the sweetest thing:  He bought me my Wish List from the MacKenzie-Childs website.  I'd forgotten what I'd put on there, and he bought me two espresso cups and saucers in case a friend would like to partake with me.  ;P

I think that I now have all the flat rimmed dinner plates from the Taylor line.  I've wanted the piccadilly mug for a long time, and I love the little bunny planter.

What I love so much about this is that my husband wanted me to have my wish list.  It isn't just about the "stuff" although I am thrilled with the presents.  I just thought he earned a lot of cuteness points for ordering my wish list items.

One of the funniest things on my list is the wrought iron mug tree.  It's flippin' HUGE.  It holds twenty-four mugs.  I need to take a better photo of it.  The box it came in was very big, too.

I'm happy to announce that all the old Taylor patterns are back!!!  I swear when I opened my email and read it the heavenly chorus sang.  You can read more about this exciting announcement HERE.

I've been playing with MacKenzie-Childs since we married, and I still enjoy it.  It makes me and my family happy!

Sweet Kris from Junk Chic Cottage sent me this adorable party favor because I won her giveaway, and it is the cutest thing!  I got it right at the end of Shelley's spring break, and she loved it, too.  She asked if Kris is a party planner, and I told her she probably could be!

Look at all the cuteness inside.

If you don't follow Kris's blog, you're missing out.  Visiting Junk Chic Cottage makes me happy because Kris makes everything beautiful.  She's a true talent!

The images below have been popular on my Instagram this past week.

In between storms, rain, and cold we've been gardening, and this column is at our back gate.
Springtime gardening makes me very happy!

This Instagram photo is for an April challenge, a book with the sky on the cover.

Instagram is making me very happy these days.  I've "met" some nice artists and bookstagrammers, and it seems to be the most positive of the social media platforms.

I'm shutting down my Facebook page and account later this week.  I posted last week that I would be doing this, and I'm getting off Facebook for several reasons. I might write a blog post about it, but I haven't quite decided yet whether it's really worth talking about here on the blog.  I would greatly appreciate it if you'd follow me on Instagram if you have an account, and I'll follow you back! The link is on my sidebar!

Finally, I'd like to thank all the TTT ladies for having my back last week.  Y'all are the reason I blog along with my other sweet bloggy friends.  I'm so grateful to y'all, for your friendship and kindness.  My blog friends make me happy!  It was also a treat to eat lunch with Jenna and Emily yesterday.  :D

What's making you happy this week?

Until next time...

Blessings!

My Happy List: Sweet Gifts, Gardening, and Instagram

Happy Tuesday, My Lovelies!  I have so many lovely things I want to share with y'all on My Happy List (and on my blog in general), but I've been spring cleaning.  Not only my house, but my blog.  I now have a secure certificate on my blog, and the change has been a great big time suck.  I've had so many settings to change, and I've been busy redirecting broken links.

Also, I've revived my older blog (deleted a lot of posts and spruced it up a bit).  You can either use the link at the top of the page or follow THIS ONE.

Meditation of My Art focuses on art journaling

Not fun...just trying to "keep it real" around here!

Spring has left Alabama.  It was so cold and rainy Saturday, and we're supposed to have a frost tomorrow morning.  I'm so over the cold because I want to plant containers and completely clean-up our patio area!  On Friday before it turned really cold, Mr. Sketchy Reader and I visited Petals from the Past, and I fell in love with a few of their heirloom roses.  In order to be considered heirloom, a rose must have been cultivated before 1867.  We bought two carpet roses, and we'll be planting them in our giant containers soon, I hope!

Here are a few photos of the roses I liked best.  Enjoy their beauty!

Even the faded ones are lovely!

Until next time...

Blessings!

Shelley before the show

Happy Tuesday, My Lovelies!  Today's happy List is all about Shelley.  We're so proud of her because she won her last horse show of the season!  She's been steadily placing higher at each successive show this season, and I know that she's been training very hard.

Sometimes I forget how far Shelley has come in her life.  Shelley has cerebral palsy, and I can remember how she struggled to walk.  She had therapeutic riding lessons when she was younger, and eventually she started competing first on American Saddlebreds (gaited horses), and the huntseat.

Shelley competed in high school on a couple of IEA teams, then when she was accepted to Judson College, she tried out for Judson College's IHSA team as a freshman.  She placed last year once or twice, but her sophomore season has been much better.

When Shelley was younger, we had the option of allowing her to compete against other students with disabilities.  But we chose not to take that route because it's a competitive world, and Shelley will have to compete against neurotypical people in the real world.  So she did.  And she does.

I can't even begin to tell you how filled my heart is.  It's full to the brim!  On Saturday, when the announcer read Shelley's number, her name, and then Judson College, I was beside myself with joy!  Her expression was cute as she left the arena.  She was also surprised!

Shelley has been blessed to have some of the very best trainers: Danielle, Jennifer, Tracey, Amy, Claire, Pam, and now her college coach, Janice.  These ladies have blessed Shelley and our family more than they'll ever know.

Although this sport is subjective, it isn't all about her winning.  It's about Shelley's working hard each week during team practice and listening to the coach.  Its about being part of a team, and finishing assigned chores during barn hour time.  It's about consistently doing workouts and posting them online and on time.  It's also learning how to encourage teammates and cheering for them when they place and comforting them when they don't.

But, WOW, does it ever feel good to see her win that blue ribbon!

I admire Shelley for her hard work.  She's had to work hard her whole life to try to reach certain goals, and she's tried so hard to catch up to her peers.  Saturday she did just that!

Shelley's favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."  And He most certainly can!

Congratulations, Sweet Girl!  Keep up the good work!

Shelley competed against riders from mostly SEC schools (the show was hosted by the University of Alabama) and a few other private colleges.

Here are a few things I've read around the web I thought might interest you:

You won't find any of this decor on the DIY and home decor blogs you read, but this article from Apartment Therapy is an in-depth analysis of the home decor in the movie Napoleon Dynamite.  Read it because I'm telling you to!!!  ;P

Even if you aren't Southern (bless your heart) you really need to know what to never serve at a ladies luncheon via Southern Living Magazine.

Last Literary Friday's round-up post about books with Irish settings featured Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series.  I found this great article via The New Yorker that describes not only the series in general, but also gives a comprehensive synopsis for each book.  This month, I'm re-reading the first four books, and then reading the last two in the series.

What's making YOU happy today?

Until next time...

My Happy List: The Last Horse Show of the Season

Tuesday, March 6, 2018

Happy Tuesday, My Lovelies!  I hope y'all have had a lovely week so far.  Today is a beautiful day after a wet weekend and Monday morning.  The trees are beautiful in our backyard, above.

Spring makes me so happy.  I guess I'm just not a winter girl at all!

I've been busy prepping for March.  There's lots going on with our family, and our girls have spring break during March, but not the same week.  *sadface*  Yesterday and Sunday I started decorating for St. Patrick's Day, so expect several Irish-themed posts next month.

Don't you just love ranunculus?

Decorating for St. Patrick's Day and greening-up our home makes me happy!

I'm participating in a challenge over at the Caffeinated Reviewer:

Oh, how this challenge is tailor-made for me!

Reading is supposed to be all about fun, yet sometimes my TBR pile makes me feel guilty. This month, I've chosen a few select books to check-off my TBR list, and this makes me very happy!

I've started a reading journal, and the entry about Holly Black's The Cruel Prince is my first (above). I'm still doing a little art journaling, but this is in a different, much smaller journal. Journaling always makes me happy!

Here are a few interesting articles I've read recently that I thought might interest y'all:

1.   How does a library handle a rare book of deadly wallpaper samples?  Read this article about rare arsenic-laced Victorian wallpaper.  By the end of the nineteenth century, the American Medical Association estimated that nearly 65% of all wallpaper in the United States contained arsenic as it was mixed with copper to make Paris green.

2.   Over at Your Modern Family there's a nice article entitled The Scary Truth About What's Hurting Our Kids that draws from several sources.  The good news is parents are able to help (after all this is a Happy List).

It would make me very happy if you'd subscribe to my newsletter.  Sent weekly, I share the top post of the week with extra content not shared on the blog.  Look at the top of my sidebar for the link!  Thanks so much!

What's making you happy this week?

Our daughter rode in a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans this year.  I'm so happy she's working hard yet making time for fun, too.  I'm very happy she's joining a Mardi Gras Krewe!

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day, and I'm ready.  Are you?  Valentine's Day fun always makes me happy!

The above thoughtful and adorable Valentine's Day care package is from the sweet Jeanie @ The Marmalade Gypsy.  I look forward to reading this novel about Truman Capote and his association with famous NYC socialites.

I love these sweet Valentines from two of my Traveling Totes Sisters, Deb at Mountain Breaths and Emily @ The French Hutch.  Y'all are the best!

I love my blog friends!  All of you.  Y'all make me happy so much with your encouragement and friendship.

Speaking of blog friends, I had lunch today with Emily and Jenna from The Painted Apron.  I had so much fun with them....they are the sweetest ladies *ever*

I wanted to share with you the second Molly Hatch bouquet in a book today because the Happy Day bouquet SHOULD be shared in My Happy List, don't you agree?

I shared Thinking of You in yesterday's post.  You can read it HERE.

Look how cute it is from the back.  I love these books, and it's fun reading about the flowers and their meanings, too.  Molly Hatch is such a talented artist!

Combining my two favorite loves, books and flowers, makes me very happy indeed!

Speaking of books and flowers....

I don't usually participate in Waiting on Wednesday memes, but I have been waiting for a long time for the release of:

Oh, JOY!  Mine should be in some time today.  *squee*  You will be reading about this book here on the blog soon!

A couple of weeks ago the latest Flavia de Luce mystery was released, and I read it quickly.  It was a very complicated mystery with several crimes and suspects.  I will review the mystery tomorrow, and there's good news for you, My Sweet Readers!  I will be giving away a copy of The Grave's a Fine and Private Place.  The giveaway begins tomorrow, so come back and enter!

One for me, and one for you!!!

Flavia de Luce murder mysteries make me so happy!

Vintage books from Prudence and the Crow in vintage fabric book sleeves

Happy Tuesday, My Lovelies!  I've been staying home quite a bit lately, and up until yesterday, we had several days of rainy, gray weather.  So the things that have made me happy of late are the activities here at home.

1.   I've been playing with a few vintage books from my Prudence and the Crow book subscription.  Many of the covers are fun!  I love the old fashioned fun of Sarah's Cottage on the left, and the pop art of Jennie on the right.  Collecting vintage books makes me happy!

2.   FINALLY I watched Loving Vincent.  Oh, how I love this film!  It was only in theaters in Birmingham for a few days and I missed it,  But we watched it on AppleTV, and I'm so smitten with it.  The acting is amazing, and the art!  Oh, how much fun it must have been for the artists who painted the oil paintings for this film.  Loving Vincent  makes me so very happy!

Have you seen this wonderful movie yet?

Getting in touch with my inner child

3.   Sunday I read A Wrinkle in Time because it's been a few years since I read it, and I baked some oatmeal chocolate chip cookies to send to the college students.  I saved a few for myself, though!

The recipe is from A Cozy Kitchen, and you make find the recipe HERE.  Y'all....these cookies are the bomb!  I love them!  The flake sea salt make them extra special.  Let me know if you bake them!

Reading wonderful stories while snacking on deliciousness makes me so, so happy.

4.   I'm so happy to report that I've started Valentine crafts.  Valentine crafts make me so happy!  I can't wait to share them with you.

That's about all I've got.  Staying at home and doing cozy activities have made me happy over the past week.  Now that the sun is out, I'm walking and getting some sunshine!

What is making you happy this week?

Until next time...

Blessings!

My Happy List: Cozy, Happy Activities

Tuesday, January 30, 2018

I have some pretty and easy tips for hosting your winter book club meeting in tomorrow's What I'm Reading Wednesday post.

Hello, My Lovelies!  I hope you're happy today.  I'm happy just thinking about all the projects and things I want to share with you here at The Sketchy Reader.

For the past couple of weeks I've been busy doing lots of work and learning all about blogging. I've been enrolled in Gina Luker's Ultimate Blogging Bootcamp, and I'm simply amazed how much I've learned.  One important lesson that really touched my heart is this one:

"Don't be a selfish blogger."

What this means is give your readers what they want.  If you want to strictly blog for yourself, then you should keep a journal.  The trick is to do this while still being authentic.  I want to give y'all content you want to read.  I think Gina is spot on about this, so I've looked at my analytics to see which posts are the most popular.  I'm in the process of editing my blog's editorial calendar based on all the work I've done for the Bootcamp, and I hope y'all will be happier readers.

Please tell me:  what type of posts would you like to see more of here at The Sketchy Reader?

1.  Completing Bootcamp is making me very, very happy!!!

Now that bootcamp is almost over, I will be able to spend more time in the art studio.  This makes me so happy.  My art journal doesn't remember what I look like!

2.  I received some Happy Snail Mail yesterday.  Happy Snail Mail makes me so, so happy....Want to see what I received?  Sure you do!

Ooooo.....something NEW from KariAnne.  What could it be???  I'll tell you this: it's something that is interactive, so I must play with it BEFORE I share it with you!
Come back January 30th for a share and review.

3.  In between working on bootcamp, I did make a couple of fun crafts.  I'll share tutorials for both crafts with you THIS WEEK so please check back and see how to make them!  Creating makes me so happy...especially when my brain is about to explode!

Remember how I stated early in January how I want to organize our family photos this year?  This simple craft is one thing you can do to not only organize photos but display and store them.  I'll post about this craft on Thursday!

This craft is a DIY challenge from The Shabby Creek Cottage (the challenge for January is a photo frame).  I'll post this tutorial on Saturday.

4.   I'm hopeful that my book club will actually get back in the routine of meeting and discussing books. Book club meetings make me happy!  I started thinking the other day about how I'd plan a winter book club meeting.  Tomorrow, I'll share how to host a perfectly lovely winter book club meeting.

These are the three books I suggest for a winter book club selection.  Come back tomorrow and see the plans, reviews, and menus for all three.

My first newsletter went out today.  Please sign-up for my newsletter.  YOU will make me happy if you do!   A pop-up should have appeared when my blog loaded.

What's making you happy today?

Until next time...

Blessings!
