What about gorgeous fabric used as art on windows and walls?

Do you think that art is too much of a distraction in the dining room? I would love to read your thoughts about art in the dining room!
Answer to the question from my last post {What do I regret not buying at the Chelsea Antique Mall?}:
sherbet glasses
Until next time...

....or do you like a traditional grouping of similar paintings, like landscapes or florals?

Not at all, art can be a real source of conversation. We had a large mirror in the dining room - it fell and I am repairing it. On the other walls, I have a painting my mom gave me - a victorian scene, I have plates flanking the window, a tapestry on another and the LORD's Supper on the other - art adds to the overall look to the room,
ReplyDeleteGreat Post, Ricki Jill,

I love art in the dining room. I started collected original art a few years ago and have really enjoyed the hunt for pieces that really speak to me. Interestingly enough, the "good stuff" goes in my dining room. I find they are conversation pieces. Some people love this one painting we have that is quite colourful while others find it odd but either way they talk about it and find it interesting. I also have a smaller one that stirs up the same type of discussion. Art is so personal and I don't think you need to worry about what somebody else will think and I certainly think it needs to touch you in some way. I love the fact that I smile almost every time I walk past one particular painting in my dining room!
ReplyDeletewell I love the art walls! Those were lovely glasses,
ReplyDeleteI knew it! LOL
ReplyDeleteWell we don't have a formal dining room but if we did I think it would have to be a large piece of art and soft lighting.
In our dining area we have a few small works of art by my friends and family. Makes it feel like they are surrounding us at the table.

Not a fan of abstract art but I love the small groupings. Did you buy anything at the antique show?
ReplyDeleteI do like art--and all kinds!!
ReplyDeleteI am not really a fan of abstract paintings. But you have a point, sometimes too much painting in the dining room can cause a bit of distraction. I would prefer huge paintings in the living room or perhaps in an idle room at home. Paintings can brighten up and make a difference in a blank space. However, I guess too much of it is not so pleasing anymore.
ReplyDeleteI have my great-grandparents' dining room furniture. I love it, but didn't really choose it. I have floral watercolors all by my stepmother's aunt, that are all in the same style frames. The pics you've posted are such a radical departure. I don't dislike any of them, but they aren't me.
ReplyDeleteWe are moving soon, and the new house will have a formal dining room, which I've never had before! Your pictures gave me inspiration!
ReplyDeleteWe have Bavarian paintings in the dining room and antiques-it is somewhat of a distraction because guests always browse the visuals during dinner.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a fancy dining room we have an eat in kitchen but my dream dining room would be simple elegant.
ReplyDeleteI would have an all white house if it weren't for kids haha.
i LOVE this post! simply adore it!!!! sending hugs to you and yours!
