Crepe Myrtles: A Southern Garden Staple

Thursday, June 30, 2011

I love Crepe Myrtles.  Most Southern gardens have one or two of them, but some folks don't care for them and call the "Crap" Myrtles.

I like all the colors, except the purplish ones.

We recently planted three in our front garden.  Here are two of them.  They are budding right now, and I can't wait until they bloom.  They are the Natchez Crepe Myrtles (white blossoms).

Do you have Crepe Myrtles in your garden?

Until next time...

  1. Oh I love those-they are all over the place here. Never knew what they were though. Have a good day.

  2. We don't have them in our yard but they are everywhere here and I love them. They seem to bloom when everything else is fading. Your yard is steeply sloped. Do you ever just roll down?

  4. Beautiful! Don't have them, but they are abundant in this area. They are one of favorites because they always remind me of my mother because of the name. Thanks

  5. Yours are so pretty! We have a set of "his" and "hers" crepe myrtles in our yard. I prune back mine {hers} the ones next to the house so they won't be taller than the house. "His" along the fence line have gotten so tall and are just FULL of flowers right now.

  12. They are lovely. I know nothing of crepe myrtles as they won't grow for us northern gardeners (zone 3b). Do they have berries at all? I was just wondering why some would call such a lovely tree "crap myrtles"?

  14. Dear Ricki Jill,
Your crepe myrtles are looking good. And the answer is Yes, I have 14 of them, 10 of them are along the driveway. We planted crepe myrtles because they bloom when everything else is fading. Love pink and purple colors.
    Have a lovely day!

  15. We love crepe myrtles! I've never heard anyone call them crap myrtles and would have to speak up if they did. :) We had such a harsh winter that 5 of ours died. Just planted a new one last weekend. It's an Arapaho...I think it will have red blooms. Yours are amazing!!

  20. Those are just gorgeous, Ricki. I love Crepe Myrtles. I don't have a tree that I actually think is a Crepe Myrtle (not 100% positive, it was here when we moved in).

  21. I made it over here at last to find I had a lot to catch up on, forgive for not commenting on every post though. Crepe Myrtles are not a plant I am familiar with but they certainly look attractive to me.

  22. Crepes are definetly a Southern tree staple. Lots of blooms, gorgeous tree trunk if they go dormant in the winter...what's not to love! Visiting from Cottage Flora Thursdays.

  24. So that is what a crepe myrtle is supposed to look like! I have two - but keep moving them so they've never bloomed! Thanks for linking up to Cottage Flora Thursday's! xoox, tracie
