Getting cozy in the art studio

Happy Tuesday, My Lovelies!  I did not pick "cozy" as my word of the year, but mayhap I should've done so.  We had a Snow Day yesterday here in Central Alabama!  Check it out:

See Mrs. Powers on the gate?  She's Southern, and needs a nice wool scarf, LOL!

Roses in the snow....a wee bit worried about them, but they've probably suffered worse abuse during summer.

Now on to my Word of the Year:

*drum roll*

I chose this word back in September when I received a notification for this book, and I ordered one for me and one for Shelley.  We had planned to go to a spa in February, but we've had to postpone that trip:

I gave Shelley's to her for Christmas.  I think it will be fun for us to work through this guided journaling and share with each other.

I found the cutest notepad at Anthropologie.  Check it out!  I'm sharing today's plans with you, but they are top secret and you are NOT allowed to share them with anyone:

The pages or perforated so I can rip this one off tomorrow.
I think this little notepad will help me maintain my self-care as well as other goals.

I love yoga, and I've made it a goal this year to do more of it.   I also love Yoga With Adriene, so I've signed-up for her 2022 Thirty Day Challenge:

Adriene with her sidekick Benji
The Westies always bark at Benji whenever he makes an appearance.  They want to be his friend!

I also have a goal to continue my teacup and teapot series.  Here is my latest one.  It's smaller, and I only have two layers of paint, so it needs lots more work.

My only requirement is that the subject must have gilding on it somewhere.
Unless I paint a MacKenzie-Childs piece which is very possible....

However, I'm still wondering whether or not cozy would make a better word of the year.  Maybe it can be self-care's understudy.  For example, I'm going to keep my book Christmas tree up for a long time because the little lights make me happy.

Speaking of Christmas trees...I've seen how some of y'all remove your Christmas ornaments and leave your lighted trees up during winter.  I am going to steal borrow that idea, I think.  I can remove the ornaments, and replace our Christmas red and green skirt for a quilted white one I use for the library's tree.

What do you think?

If I do that I'll post a photo, I promise.

But for now, we're enjoying most of our Christmas decorations through Epiphany.

In closing, I will be burning many more candles this year.  This is an actual goal of mine for the year.  Non-scented, mostly, but I do like scented candles in the kitchen.  I burned an oatmeal cookie candle all during Christmas.  I think I might light the Espresso one next.  I purchase them at Anthropologie, and they are by a company called Boulangerie.

Hmmmm.....Methinks the Vanilla Fig would smell lovely, too...
I like the way they look in my kitchen, but most of all I love the way they smell!

I promise I will not burn the house down with the candles.

I also have a few goals regarding books, but I will share them with you tomorrow because this post is long enough.  ;P  Tomorrow's post will be a synopsis of my books for 2021 as well as goals for 2022.  I'm combining the two topics for your reading pleasure.

Do you make New Year's resolutions?  Do you care to share yours if you do?  Do you make goals?  Do you have a word of the year?  I'm a Nosy Nellie and I want to know.  Tell me all about it in comments.  And if you think that Words of the Year and the whole ball of wax is stupid, I want to know that, too.  This is a safe space.  Promise.  No judgment.

Until next time...

Blessings!

2022 Word of the Year and Goals

Tuesday, January 4, 2022

I hope y'all are enjoying the Christmas season so far!

Happy New Year, My Lovelies!

We've been traveling over Christmas, and we missed a flight or two, had two pieces of luggage lost, and one member of our party was detained at the gate and we almost didn't make it home.  We had a lovely time on our vacation once we were at the resort, but getting there and returning home was not very delightful.

Today I prefer to look ahead and give you, my Lovely Readers, a preview of what you'll read about here on The Sketchy Reader.

The Westies are looking forward to a happy and healthy 2018.
Finlay and Mustang Sally bring so much joy to our lives...they're encouraging me to bring back My Happy List.  Wait and see if I do because the jury is still out about that one!

I'm looking forward to several book releases this year:

I hope to share these books with you soon!

I'm happy to be a part of the Tales of the Traveling Totes.   My first post will be March 1, 2018, and I can't wait to share our Christmas and other winter adventures with you then.  Here's a sneak peek:

This year I have a major project I'll be working on:  organizing family photos in creative ways.
I have a ton of photos hidden in a cabinet, and I want to organize them by creating beautiful projects to display in our home.  Here are a couple of projects I'm planning:

Both projects utilize 7 Gypsies products

I'll still continue my Sketchy Reader Snail Mail Letters because I'm having too much fun with them!

December's Indie Next List letter

Last but not least:  My Word of the Year.  You'll have to wait for Wednesday's post.  Stop back by because there will be a giveaway associated with my Word of the Year.  How's that for a teaser?

I hope you're having a wonderful beginning to 2018.  We'll be watching a little football game tonight called the Sugar Bowl.  Roll Tide Roll!

Until next time...

Blessings!

...or how I'm feeding my salvaged wood addiction!

I've been working on organization in our home this winter, and one of the biggest challenges is sorting through our books, organizing the ones we want to keep, and donating the rest to our local library.  I really wanted a low bookcase for our kitchen to go behind our sofa for my cookbooks (our family room opens to our kitchen).  Books should be stored where you use them, and having them on a different floor in the library didn't make a whole lot of sense.  I found a few pieces I love (like Rachel Ashwell's Warrenton Console), but the dimensions weren't quite right.

Mr. Art @ Home suggested that we visit our favorite resource for custom furniture: Southern Accents in Cullman, Alabama.  I described what I wanted, and the end result far exceeded my expectations.

The bookcase is made from old walnut.

The bookcase also holds several kitchen items that I use often: items that are bulky and take-up a lot of cabinet and counter space.  I'm very pleased with the end result!

We went with a waxed, unstained finished.

If you look closely at the back of the bookcase, the black stripes are actually sawtooth marks from long ago.

Notice the peg details...the carpenters at Southern Accents are true artisans!

I highly recommend Southern Accents.  This is a tile with their logo on it.

I'll post more ideas and tips for organizing books and paper in the next couple of weeks.  I've found some wonderful resources, and I'll share those as well!

Until next time...

Blessings!

Changes In the Kitchen

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Good Monday Morning!  I hope all my Southern friends are preparing for the impending winter storm event here in the Deep South.  :/

I have been working on achieving my January Goals, and I will be posting a full report either at the end of this week or at the beginning of next week. This month I've been focusing on organizing our books and pantry as well as getting control of paper.  I'll also share tips that have helped me during this process.

I've also been working in the studio on some fun art projects, so stay tuned!

I thought it would be a great time to update you on The Book of Doing.  I've been checking-off projects left and right, I tell ya!

1.  Learn to Code:  Check!  I know the basics.

2.  Go Up a Hill And Go Down Really Fast:  Check!  I love to ride bikes!

3.  Eat More Fiber:  Check!  I've been adding kale to salads and I've been eating a high fiber cereal.

4.  Mail Something:  Check!  I just mailed a surprise to a blog friend.  ;P

5.  Share an interest fact.  Okay!  The book shares the fact that flossing your teeth can add years to your life.  Studies show there's a link between flossing and lower rates of diabetes and heart disease.  Check!

6.  Draw yourself as a cartoon character.  Check!

Obviously I have no shame to post this cartoon of myself on the blog.  I look like a demented Tinkerbell!

Now on to Musical Monday...

Since I've been working around the house the past few days, I've been listening to a whole lot of Pandora radio as well as SiriusXM radio.  One of my favorite songs lately has been Cardiac Arrest by Bad Suns.

What have you been listening to lately?  Join Miss Angie @ My So-Called Chaos.

Until next time…

Monthly Goals

For January, I hope to accomplish the following:

1.   Purge all art and craft supplies and re-organize them.
2.   Walk and/or do thirty minutes on the elliptical or an hour on the treadmill.
3.   Organize all books and make a donation to our local library.
4.   Purge and better organize pantry and donate items to a food closet.
5.   Join some reading challenges on Goodreads.

This year I'm focusing on purging and donating.  We have so much that those in need can use, mostly things the girls have outgrown.

What are your plans for January?

Until next time...

Blessings!

Monthly Goals for January

 photo WWTKbutton-1-1_zps2077872a.jpg

Questions:

{no. 1} Show us in pictures how your Summer is going so far:

{no. 2} What is one thing you are never too busy for? Spending time with my girls.  I love to take a break each afternoon, make a fresh pot of tea, and listen to them chatter about what's going on in their lives.

{no. 3} What were you doing 30 minutes ago? I'm so happy you asked!  I was working on my first challenge from this book:

Do you want to see my first challenge?  Sure you do!  It's a create your own sundae activity:

             photo cc4dc36b-fa51-4958-b68b-e17854aebd6c.jpg

This would be my dream sundae:  green tea ice cream, pineapple, and honey.

But since I'm trying to make healthier choices, I'll have this instead:

Pinkberry cherry yogurt, chocolate sprinkles, and strawberries

I will be working through this delightful Book of Doing.  I'll post my results from time to time.  The purpose of the book is to unlock creativity, and I really need it.  It will help me get out of my comfort zone a little, too.

{no. 4} What is the best advice you have ever received?  Hand your problem over to God and quit worrying about it!  I hardly ever follow that advice because I'm a worrier.

{no. 5} Share some of your favorite quotes:

Thank-you for hosting, Kenzie and Scriptor!

Until next time...

Blessings!
