"Cleansing of the fifth of the women of Zion" is an allusion to a chemist purifying metals. This is symbolic of the Lord purifying sin from Israel. This "refining process" of the nation of Israel will leave a holy remnant that would be cared for and protected by God. The events in verse four come chronologically before verse 3 (and then 5 and 6).
