Literary Friday: It's 3.14. It's Pi Day!!!

Friday, March 14, 2014

Since March 14th falls on Friday this year, I decided to dedicate my Literary Friday post to Pi Day!

According to the Pi Day website, Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14.

*giggles*  Nerd humor.

I don't usually share cookbooks on Literary Friday, but this year I'm happily making an exception.  I recently purchased the best recipe books for pies: The Southern Pie Book by Jan Moon.  I love this cookbook, and the photos in it are so pretty.  The chapters are very helpful, everything from hand pies, Southern pies, and pie toppings and equipment needed for baking perfect pies.

Jan Moon is from Birmingham, and she owns Dreamcakes.  I've posted about Dreamcakes several times, and you can read this post about an Impromptu Dreamcakes Party.

Pi is a ratio, and I chose a recipe that's the perfect blend of bitter and sweet: Mocha Fudge Cobbler.

The wonderful thing about this cobbler is that I bet you have everything in your pantry to make it!

Mocha Fudge Cobbler

Ingredients:
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. table salt
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar, divided
1/4 cup plus 2 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa, divided (I used Hershey's)
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1 1/2 cups hot coffee (I used The Fresh Market's Mocha Cocoa Coffee)
whipped cream or ice cream, optional

Directions:

1.   Preheat oven to 350.  Stir together the first three ingredients, 3/4 cup granulated sugar, and 2 Tbsp. cocoa in a medium bowl.  Stir together milk, oil, and vanilla; add to flour mixture, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened.  Spread batter into a lightly greased 2-qt. baking dish.

2.   Stir together brown sugar, remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and remaining 1/4 cup cocoa in a small bowl; sprinkle over batter in pan.  Using a spoon, gently drizzle hot coffee over brown sugar mixture, being careful not to disturb layers.  Do not stir!  The coffee will sit on top.

3.   Bake at 350 for 35 to 40 minutes or until a cake layer forms on top and springs back when lightly touched.  Remove from oven to a wire rack, and cool 25 minutes.  (It is very hot, and you really do need to allow for the cooling time!)  Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired.

NOTE:  I drizzled a little Bailey's Irish Cream on top.  It's the perfect dessert for St. Patrick's Day!

The cobbler is like a giant lava cake, only better.

I will be posting about Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Book Store next week.  I am loving it!  It's truly a nerd-fest!  What are you reading?  This is a linky!

  1. I love the Nerd part myself. Oh, maybe because I am one too. He he he. You dessert looks wonderful and this books sounds like it is up your alley. I love the conversation bubble in one of your pictures.

You know what another book which would have been good to do a review on today? (I have not read it yet.) "The Life of Pi" (I cannot underscore in comments) I have picked up a chocolate pudding pie to celebrate. They also wear Pi shirts they purchased one year while they were in Pre-Algebra. Every year the Pre-Algebra teacher comes up with a new Pi shirt for the students to purchase and celebrate today. I love it!

  8. Happy Pi Day! That recipe looks delicious! I *just* ran out of cocoa powder and was debating re-stocking on it. Now I shall have to, so I can make this. YUM! I bet I could sub a stout for the coffee, too, and make a St Paddy's Day Guiness Cake type of thing. Hrmm.... :)

  16. I checked on Friday to see you Pi Day posted and it wasn't there. I must have checked just before you posted.

    Oh, your cobbler looks awesome.

I love your ideas for St. Patrick's Day, but I won't be having a green day. I am having a "P" day. I have to Paint - a Piece of furniture and some Pillows, swim at the Pierpont and work on the Patio.
