Musical Monday: The Love Shack

Monday, April 1, 2013

While boating this weekend, the teenagers asked what music we liked when we were young. Mr. Art @ Home commented about how we didn't really share the same taste in music, and he said that I loved REM, the B-52's, and The Talking Heads when we met in college.  It's a good thing I didn't attend the University of Georgia, or I might have flunked out due to their music scene!  We played some songs from these bands, and this is the one that they liked best:

"Love Shack"
B-52's

"Love Shack"

If you see a faded sign at the side of the road that says
"15 miles to the
Love Shack"
Love Shack, yeah, yeah
I'm headin' down the Atlanta highway
Lookin' for the love getaway
Headed for the love getaway
I got me a car, it's as big as a whale
And we're headin' on down to the Love Shack
I got me a Chrysler, it seats about 20
So hurry up and bring your jukebox money

The love shack is a little old place where we can get together
Love Shack, baby (a-Love Shack, baby)
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack (Love, baby, that's where it's at)
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack (Love, baby, that's where it's at)

Sign says (woo) "Stay away, fools"
'Cause love rules at the Love Shack
Well, it's set way back in the middle of a field
Just a funky old shack and I gotta get back
Glitter on the mattress
Glitter on the highway
Glitter on the front porch
Glitter on the highway

The Love Shack is a little old place where we can get together
Love Shack, baby (Love Shack, baby)
Love Shack, that's where it's at
Love Shack, that's where it's at

Huggin' and a-kissin'
Dancin' and a-lovin'
Wearin' next to nothin'
'Cause it's hot as an oven
The whole shack shimmies
Yeah, the whole shack shimmies
The whole shack shimmies when everybody's
Movin' around and around and around and around
Everybody's movin', everybody's groovin', baby
Folks linin' up outside just to get down
Everybody's movin', everybody's groovin', baby
Funky little shack
Funky little shack

Hop in my Chrysler, it's as big as a whale and it's about to set sail
I got me a car, like, it seats about 20
So come on and bring your jukebox money

The Love Shack is a little old place where we can get together
Love Shack, baby (a-Love Shack, baby)
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack (Love, baby, that's where it's at, yeah)
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack (Love, baby, that's where it's at)

Bang, bang, bang, on the door, baby
Knock a little louder, baby
Bang, bang, bang, on the door, baby
I can't hear you
Bang, bang, bang, on the door, baby
Knock a little louder, sugar
Bang, bang, bang, on the door, baby
I can't hear you
Bang, bang, bang, on the door, baby (Knock a little louder)
Bang, bang, bang, on the door, baby
Bang, bang (On the door, baby)
Bang, bang (On the door)
Bang, bang (On the door, baby)
Bang, bang
Your what?
Tin roof, rusted

Love Shack, baby, Love Shack
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack (Love, baby, that's where it's at, yeah)
Love Shack, baby, Love Shack (Love, baby, that's where it's at)
Love, baby, Love Shack
Huggin' and a-kissin',
Dancin' and a-lovin'
At the Love Shack

There has been a lot of speculation on the most famous line in the song, "tin roof....rusted." Cindy Wilson (B-52's lead singer) claims that it was just nonsense that she shouted out during recording, and it just stuck.  It wasn't meant as a euphemism for anything else.

The girls didn't get REM at all, liked The Talking Heads okay, but was scared of "Rock Lobster." They thought it was totally weird.

What have you been listening to lately?

Until next time...

Blessings!

  1. I love Love Shack- it's on my iPod, and REM.

We spent Easter at our next door neighbor's house and the subject of music came up. Judy is 4 years older than us and Dick is 16 years older. The age difference is enough to put us in different eras of music. All of Judy's kids in their 40s commented that they have loved the music drifting from our house to their back yard over the years.

    Don't get fooled today!

  3. I love The Love Shack!

I remember listening to Tiffany songs over and over again. And Debbie Gibson.

Right now, I have all of the songs from Les Mis running through my head.

  4. Oh man you just took me back...I was not in college when I was so into these bands, I was in grade school, lol
I was the only teen girl listening to REM, and that is before they hit the MTV scene. I still adore Talking Heads and early REM but I left the B-52's behind. I just can't, nope not any more, they make my ears hurt now, LOL
Thanks for the trip down memory lane

  5. When my daughter was a grade schooler, she played Love Shack so many times her cat thought she was home and ran to find her if it came on the radio!

  7. Ahhhh that takes me back! I feel a bit sad for the kids these days....we had soundtracks to life that were really varied- bands like the Beach Boys were playing with all sorts of electrical sounds, and pop was just starting to set in, but we still had a classical influence underneath it all. Some of it was freaky and weird, some of it was catchy, but you could enjoy Tears for Fears and REM and ELO and anything else equally. Now it seems everything is very pop-focused and radio-play-focused (thanks, MTV), so they have less diversity in the genres.

Also, Love Shack should be a staple of everyone's music education because it is SO EASY to sing at karaoke! (not that I sign karaoke....but in my shower, this one is easy to sing). ;)
