Decorating with Pantone's 2013 Color of the Year: Emerald

Saturday, January 5, 2013

I was not overly enthused when Pantone chose emerald as its color of the year for 2013.  I love green, and we have several green accents in our home, but I prefer warm greens, not the cool, blue-green emerald tone.

I received an article from Country Living Magazine about how to use the color of the year in your decor, and I was a bit amused that none of the greens were a true emerald.

I do love this green kitchen island from Country Living Magazine.

Here are a few examples of green accents in our home.  I also have lots of table linens with green we enjoy.

We have many salvaged wood frames in various shades of green.

And our cart in the library has green wheels.  I found the book vase @ Ballard Designs.

More distressed wood with green, this time on a plant stand in our foyer.

Actually, I did find some emerald in this Hitchcock Field mini compote from MacKenzie-Childs.  I do love this new pattern, but I haven't collected much of it yet.

So what do you think about Pantone's color of the year?  Will you be using it in your decor this year or including it in your wardrobe?

Until next time...

Blessings!

  1. I love to wear the emerald greens, but in interior design I prefer the soft sage ones. Love that book vase!! Sorry that we can't send our snowflakes to Sandy Hook. I had mine all ready to go. But, perhaps I can make more and give them to the elementary school down the street in honor of the children on Newtown.

  3. I agree. I am not a huge fan of emerald green, but love some of the other greens, especially the Country Living table in your first picture and the book-vase on your table.
    Your rooms are lovely!

    Happy New Year!

  4. I love emerald green... In the eighties forest green was the "it" color. I bought a couch and a mini van. That was a poor decision. By the time I had enough money for new ones, forest green was NOT anyone's favorite! I won't even mention that avocado was the color the year 1976-77 we built my house.... Henceforth and forever avocado tub, shower stall, and stool.... Green is scary.... But I love it. Maybe just a sweater.

  5. Ricki! I was amazed by your cart in the library. I never have thought of that. That spot in your home deserves a magazine feature!!!

  6. Hmmmm, I think the only thing close to emerald I have is some of my houseplants. Then again, I am not really sure that what I do constitutes decorating! :)

  8. I love green but I don't have much in my home decor.
I am adding more green with some crisp succulents in glass vases to add color in my studio.
I will stick to green in my clothing more so than my home.

PS love your new header painting!

  9. Emerald green is one of my VERY favorite colors of all next to turqoise and orange, but I love to wear it mostly. I'm a sage or celery green girl when it comes to decorating. You had more green that I would have guessed! LOL, Hope your weekend is great.

  11. I thought the same thing. I like some shades of green and others...not so much! I definitely don't wear much green and don't think that will change.:)
    Love your library cart!!!
Hope you are having a GREAT weekend!

  12. I think it's a beautiful color, and I like wearing it in small amounts, but not too sure about it in my decor. I do love green, but more of the sages & olives. I really like your white plant stand with the touches of green peeking through.

    Happy New Year, Ricki Jill!

  13. Hi Ricki Jill ~

You are so right...this is not emerald at all! We May babies know the true colour! Love your take on it though...I liked 2011's Honeysuckle pink the best.

    Happy New Year to you.

    Ciao bella,

  14. WA state is known as the Emerald City so I'm really excited about this! Lol!

I like your subtle green touches and I agree .. most of the greens I've been seeing are NOT emerald. My girlfriend has a mohair chair that's like a forest green. It's gorgeous. I have a coupleindoor plants that brighten things up (in this gray city) and a few odds and ends. Have you seen those decorative balls? I have one made of moss and they are perfect to group in threes or to place on top a small urn. Sounds really simple but really adds a nice pop of color if you don't want to invest in larger green items.

  15. Seattle being the Emerald City, I feel like I'm halway there! ;)

I love blue-greens, like Emerald, as a color. And I think I look good in them. But I don't think I'd decorate with them. Living in a very wood-filled home, I prefer warmer tones for decorating. But I *am* relieved to not have to see tangerine orange everywhere I go now. ;)

  18. Ricki Jill,
I used hunter green in our home for about 20 years, I've gone another direction now but still find the color compelling in homes I've admired.

  19. I love green and have little bits of it every where. Not too sure about the exact shade that Pantone named but I'm happy about the green choice, in general.

You should show snippets of your home more often. It's really pretty!

  20. I am not really a green person and emerald green seems cold to me.

  21. Oh I love the plant stand, do you mind me asking where you got it or did you build it yourself. The shabby'ness of it looks awesome!
