We Want to Know Wednesday: Mamarazzi Has BLOGS on the BRAIN!

null

Mamarazzi has been thinking about her blog lately, so she is asking us blogging questions this week.  She wants to know:

{1} Please describe your blog. Does it fall into one category or many? How has it changed from post one?

I think this is where I am making my biggest mistake in blogging.  A few bloggers have said that my blog is "all over the place."  They did not mean it as a compliment.  But the truth is I love art, I love to read, and I love my family.  I actually like spending time with my family and planning fun things for them to do even on days that aren't really special.  I know that if my blog could fit in a category I would probably have many more followers, but I think I would get bored, and I am not sure my voice would sound "honest."  I do not think my blog has changed very much since post one, but I did add pages and have organized it better.

What do you guys think?  Should I focus more on one thing?

{2} What 3 things do you LOVE about blogging?

1.   I love the virtual friendships.  It made my summer last summer when I met Bonnie.
2.   I love the many things I have learned from following so many amazingly smart and talented women.
3.   I love the opportunity to encourage others.

{3} What 3 things do you DISLIKE about blogging?

1.   When I comment on blogs and I NEVER hear anything back from the blogger....nothing but crickets.
2.   WORD VERIFICATION !!!  :/
3.   Snarky comments!  I have not had many of them at a on my blog, but I have read them on other blogs.  These comments always annoy me!

{4} What 3 things do you WISH OTHER BLOGGERS would do? Any tips for them?

1.   Please, please PLEASE!!!  for the love of Pete turn off word verification!
2.   I do not understand the noreply comment bigger thingie....really?  You will not let me email you a response after you've left a comment?  *WHY*???????  I wish someone would explain this one to me.
3.   When you post an incredible creation, whether it is a recipe, craft or DIY project, please post a tutorial so we can at least learn all about your creative process!

{5} I know we all have lots of blogs we read, but what are 3 blogs your never miss?

This one is tough because there are several I never miss.  Other than Mamarazi's blog (obviously because I almost always link to My Happy List), here are the three blogs I never miss because I met them early when I began blogging, and they have encouraged me more than they will ever know:

  2. I'm no blog expert but I think it's good to blog about more than just one thing ... you are more than just what you are cooking or reading or your kids it's about all if that. So I would say, blog about you and your life ... but adding pages is an easy way to keep it organized.

Thanks for your blog links, going to check them out.

O and yes, it's becoming a pet peeve of mine ... when you comment on a blog (on more than one or ten occasions) and never ever get a reply!

  3. Ricki Jill, I know I've said it before, but your blog is wonderful in its hodge podge. It's like a patchwork quilt of different pieces of joy in your life all sewn together. Its theme is pretty, happy things of life.

You are one of the people that took my blogging to a very real level. Before I was just writing into a vacuum. And then you began posting comment after comment and I thought, "Well, I can't quit now; I have a reader."

I wish I had learned the no-commenter reply thing sooner.

  4. Awww Ricki, thank you! That is so sweet and I am truly honored!

I think many of us have a tendency to go "all over the place" when we blog. That's real life, so how could you be expected to focus on one thing all the time? I myself like a little variety. Who knows? Maybe I've got it all wrong too. :D

I couldn't agree more with your anger with word verification and the noreply comment thing. They both drive me nuts and I just don't get it!

  5. I'm ok with all over the place! I have some blogs I read for specific things: design, photography, etc but people who discuss it all are more exciting. :)

  6. I like blogs that run the gamut. (Gosh, my blog does that too; maybe I just have a short attention span!) I feel like I know more about the blogger if she writes about various aspects of her life. As you said, getting to know other bloggers is part of the fun.

I also don't get the noreply thing. I sometimes wonder if people even know they are noreply commenters. I know my word verification once got turned back on without my knowing. Luckily another blogger told me it was on. And on word verification, some bloggers have word verification AND must approve comments before they appear. The blogging world is really not that dangerous!

  8. This is my first visit here, so I really shouldn't add my 2 cents, but from this visit alone, I'd have to say I LOVE IT!! Don't change, be true to yourself. I'm now a follower!

  9. Yeah, I cannot stand snarky comments and sometimes it's worse when a comment is not intended as snarky and comes off that way.

  10. No reply ~ I share that my email is strictly for our business. Comments on my blog are where I prefer to read my friends comments. It is too hard going thru the business transactions & personal notes. We prefer to use No Reply ... those that need our email address just ask in their comments & we contact them.

Word verifications ~ UGH! What a pain! Get rid of it.

    Have a great week ~
    TTFN ~

  12. Oh thanks girlfriend. You are the sweetest. Finally got the cookbooks mailed out. I have been driving around with them and found out my favorite mailing center closed so I had to go to a real post office. Waaaa!

  14. Ricki Jill,
I've only recently discovered your blog, after you visited mine (thanks for leaving a comment) but I think a blog should reflect your interests...there are plenty of blog sites and if a reader is looking for something specific it shouldn't be difficult to find it. When I first started blogging I was clueless and the more blogs I visited the more I was trying to mimic those that I liked, then I realized that it's so much better to be your authentic self. It's the old "can't please all of the people all of the time" and while I don't get a ton of comments I feel the readers that do comment are blog-friends and I treasure them! That said, I also realize there are some very sweet readers (many of them good friends) who confess they never leave a comment and that's okay by me too!
Sorry to have rambled a bit...such a fun discussion. I too hate the word verification, often fail the test the first go round. :-)

  15. Here is something I have figured out. I am never going to be a ginormous blog. I blog about the things I love and that I am interested in. I am not making spectacular things out of junk, I am not a paint expert, etc. etc. etc..... I have also found that I have made and continue to make some wonderful blogging friendships. I value these more than having a million readers. You know I love your blog. So, just listen to your heart. (and for pete's sake I agree please, people turn off those word verifications)
    Hugs,
    Laura

  16. Please, please don't change anything about your blog. I love reading it just the way it is. I enjoy seeing your art, seeing how you decorate your table, hearing about the things you do with your family, getting your recipes, seeing your planting projects and your redecorating projects. I look forward to it every day. I agree about the word verification.

  18. Oh Ricki Jill,
You are so true to your heart. I know what you mean because I love so many things too, not just one. I love photography, decorating, tea, and the girls love travel, so it's hard to have my blog fit into one category, as you said. I think your blog is wonderful, and I know that whenever I visit here, I will come over to sincerity and a warm heart. What more can we ask for? A happy Mother's Day to you, my lovely friend.

  21. i love random, whatever you feel like blogging about blogs. that's how i am too. why stick with just one thing? boring!
you do whatever you want. it's your blog.

you are so right on the irritating things about blogging. what i loathe most is mean anonymous comments, if you are gonna be mean, own it.

thanks for linking up and your fabulous comments.

  22. So...Ok, I honestly don't think it's the content of your blog. I love the content. I think it's the title it threw me off...I remember back when I was blog hopping I thought this was like a home decor or some type of art blog or something..I think the title just threw me off..but after I looked up some posts I started to realize it wasn't just an ART blog or design or whatever but I noticed the Art. Literature Family....

As a Graphic design student...I would suggest maybe making the font bigger for Art.Literature.Family...or something . Or maybe a little blurb "what I love" I don't know. Just a suggestion..totally don't have to listen to me. I love your blog.

Don't stick to one thing PLEASE! That's why I chose randomlicious because there was no way I could stick to one topic! LOL

NOw I just noticed how to join at the very bottom I'm a blog tard!!

  23. This is a perfect example of what I like about blogging...meeting new and interesting people. :)
You know what's so funny...I spent a bit of time complaining about word verification...then I realized I had it on mine. I'd thought I already turned it off and so then I felt like a complete moron. LOL :P
    Happy blogging! :)

  24. Hee hee hee....I said for the love of pete in my answer, too! It's such a simple thing, why won't people turn it off?

  25. Word Verification is dumb... really dumb. Worse then that is no-reply. Why leave a comment if don't want to continue the conversation???

    ReplyDelete
  26. Blogging is about you, keep posting about what you want to post about! You don't blog for other people :) If someone doesn't like it then they can move on.
I hate those cricket comments, especially if you comment on a few different posts on one blog.. and nothing.
Word verification and No-Reply are on my crap list. Haha!
    Great answers :D

  27. I love reading all of the different things you write about, and find it fun when I learn something new (like I remember the day I found out you were a painter...well, I didn't really love that day because I was even more green with envy over your talent). It makes you seem even more like a friend that I get to read/listen to different things...like real life! Xoxox

  28. OH my goodness I haven't had time to visit all my favourite blogs for a couple of days so I'm late here. What a sweet post and I can see even more why I love your blog - we both have blogs that fit in the category 'eclectic'. Mine is all over the place too and that just suits me to a T as I'm rather eclectic. Any time I think of narrowing my focus I kind of get panicky about thinking what to write. I never run out if I can write about anything. I'm so flattered that I'm one of your must-reads. I always have to check out yours too. I'll have to stop by the other two blogs you listed.
