Goals for 2011

I do not have many goals for 2011 because two of them are real doozies!  I'm sure I will think of more goals and projects as the year progresses, but for now, here are my goals:

1.  My oldest daughter will graduate from High School this spring, and go away to college this fall.  I am starting to get things together that she will need for her dorm suite.  This will take quite a bit of time (obviously my first "doozy" project) because I want to get as much as I can on sale.  I have already started a list, and as things go on sale, I am making purchases.  We have a designated area in the basement where we are boxing-up all the college necessities.  My daughter and I are so close, and, although she will only be one hour away, I will miss her terribly!  A few things on her wish list: a coffee maker with a timer; a tall, vertical book case that won't take up a lot of floor space; a cute lamp for her desk.  I found this lamp, and I think it would be too, too cute for Shanley's dorm room:

The lamp is from one of my favorite online stores, Cottage Chic.  It is a bit pricey, but if we save money on many other items, then it can be her one splurge.

I found this wonderful bookcase at Amazon.  I like it because it holds many books, but takes up very little floor space:

2.  I plan on converting our living room (that we *never* use) to an art studio for me and my younger daughter this spring.  She has quite a bit of talent, and she will be taking art classes next year.  This will be my other "doozy" project because I am having a very difficult time finding inspiration for it. Most art studios I have seen are way too messy; it will be the first room people see when they enter our home. Here is a space I like because it combines both craft space and reading space.  I found it at Better Homes and Gardens. The title of the article is "Idea-Packed Home Office for the Entire Family."

3.  I want to learn how to bake brioche.  I have always wanted to learn since I tasted the most delicious brioche in the world in New Orleans (even better than what I had in Paris).  It might take a while to find the right recipe, but I do have a brioche pan already!  If you have a fabulous brioche recipe you would like to share, please send it to me!

4.  Trip and I want to remodel our master bathroom, but not until fall.  We want to keep our existing cabinetry, but replace the counters, sinks, floors, faucets, add some lighting, and tile the shower. My husband will have no problem with this renovation because he has plenty of experience!  My main inspiration for our master bathroom is Sue Balmforth's bath and style. Sue owns the pretty store Bountiful in Southern California.

Another home that inspires me is Yasmine McGrane's gorgeous San Francisco home.  I could look at pictures of this lovely home for days!  She is the owner of the incredible store Maison Reve.  You can see more pictures of the McGranes' home at Better Homes and Gardens Magazine.  The article is listed under "House Tours," and it is entitled: A French Flea-Market Retreat.

I would love to find space for a vanity like this.  So romantic!

5.  This is a small thing to accomplish, but I want a very large vase for my very large coffee table.  I love arranging flowers, and we are lucky to have a nice wholesale flower market here in Birmingham.  Don't misunderstand: I have found many pretty vases that are large enough and gorgeous, but they have *all* been way too expensive.  I have not really found anything at antique stores that I could afford, either.  So I have decided to make something! I ripped this page out of Romantic Country Magazine years ago because I thought it would be a fun project. It is a decoupaged vase made out of images from magazines glued to a terra cotta flowerpot.  I can't wait to make it and use it!

I hope I accomplish my goals this year.  What are your goals and planned projects for 2011? I would love to hear from you!

Until next time...

Blessings!
Ricki Jill

  2. My son is still a few years away from college, but I already get weepy just thinking about it. I love that you're already planning for your daughter's dorm. My mom's "plan" when I went to college was to swing by Target on our way and pick up everything we needed, so it was a little crazy. Ha.

Also love your plan to turn the living room into an art studio. Can't wait to see how it turns out! :)

  6. THose are big goals. My son is already at university and my daughter was away this past summer and early fall and it was tough. She is going away to universtiy next fall as well. Unfortunately she is going to one that is right across the country ( a 3 hour flight away) so we won't see her much - boohoo. I'm not looking forward to it either.

I've always liked Laura's art studio from Bright, Bold and Beautiful. Here is the link: http://brightboldbeautiful.blogspot.com/2010/04/art-studio-home-office.html You might find some inspiring things in it as well to combine with the one you found.
